WOOSTER “ Howard W. Stahl, 88, of Wooster died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Brenn-Field Nursing Center following a period of declining health.
He was born January 1, 1928 in East Union Twp. The son of Emery and Emma Fordyce Stahl and lived most of his life in Wayne Township.   He was a 1946 graduate of Smithville High School.
He was a farmer and carpenter, previously employed at Wooster Lumber Company and various construction crews before establishing Stahl Farms and Construction in 1973.   He served as a Wayne Township Trustee for over 30 years.
He was a member of the Builders Exchange, Wayne Holmes Soap Box Derby Director, WCSCC Advisory Board- Carpentry Program, Wooster Area, Ohio and National Sheep Associations, a 35 year 4-H advisor and served on various 4-H and Extension committees, in 1997 he was honored with the Wayne County 4-H Meritorious Service Award, a member of the Madisonburg Lions, the Farm Bureau, a 60 year member of Union Grange and a member of the American Legion for over 60 years.
He was a director for 35 years of the Wayne County Agricultural Society (Fair Board) where he served as Superintendent of the Sheep Department.   Howard was instrumental in establishing the Kiddie Tractor Pull and building design at the Wayne Co. Fair.   He also served as a District 5 Director of the Ohio Fair Managers association for 9 years and was honored as District Director of the Year in 2008.   In 2010, Howard was inducted into the Ohio Fair Managers Association (OFMA) Hall of Fame.
He proudly served his country in the US Army Signal Corps for 2 years stationed in California.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Berry Stahl, whom he married February 14, 1954; his children, Deb (Mike) Olinger of Valley City, Dave (Laurie) of Wooster, Steve of Akron and Ron (Janice) of Gahanna;   his grandchildren, Sarah (Evan) Layton, Kelly Olinger, Katie (Keith) Kerns, Ashley (Ben) Hoffman, Tyler (Erica) Stahl and Holly and Lindsey Stahl; great-grandchildren, Khloe Kerns and Carson Layton with 2 more expected this summer; a sister Annie Howman of Orrville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 5-8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Eric Fairhurst officiating.   Burial will follow in the Smithville Cemetery.
