WOOSTER “ Jon Michael Steele, 70, passed away surrounded by the love of family after a battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Canton.
Born to Robert and Vivian (Gossard) Steele in Lodi, Ohio on October 22, 1943.   He called Wooster, Ohio œhome with the exception of a time in Punta Gorda, Florida when he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Honeywell, whom he nursed until her untimely death.
Jon had a rare and beautiful courage, a courage that faced challenges from birth.   With a variety of physical challenges and at a time before special education was enforced, Jon persevered and in one of his proudest moments, graduated from Wooster High School in the Class of œ64 where he met and maintained lifelong friendships.
He held a variety of jobs, for many years one being a gas station attendant at Red Head Gas Station in Wooster.   When gas stations became more automated and his job was eliminated, Jon worked at Mann ™s Laundry until an industrial accident crushed his arm.   Rather than give up, that courage of his kicked in and he returned to the workforce, doing stock at Jewell Motor Parts until fate offered him an opportunity to travel to Florida with a friend.   While there, he found a job doing lawn care for a mobile home park settled with elderly residents, a great fit as when he was a boy he would mow lawns of all of the elderly neighbors on Gasche Street and not charge them.
Jon rallied his courage, made the œtrip into a move and settled in, and soon took another leap of faith in marrying Mary Ann while knowing of her heart condition.   For most of his short married life, he did all of the personal nursing care of her, until he was widowed.
Returning home, Jon cared for his mother and when she passed away he moved back into the old neighborhood area of his childhood.   Legally blind with unique eyes, Jon had an extremely rare œone of a kind surgery, which will be written in the medical journals.   Jon loved life, and loved people and was a humble and simple man whose ready humor mad friends easily.
He was a fan of wrestling and baseball games.   Being an avid lover of history and very nostalgic, he celebrated Americana, having an adoration of classic movies.   In his humble home his walls were plastered with photos of family and countless babies of friends, many pets and a jumble of joyous faces of those he loved.   He embraced life, met it head on and savored its joys overcoming countless obstacles which would individually have stopped others in their tracks.   Courageous, literally to his last breath, he set an example for us all.   Forever in our hearts he will remain, and remind us to savor life, love one another and carry on.
Left to celebrate his life are his siblings and their children, Robert œNick & Pam Steele of Dalton, daughters Amy (Steve) Palfy and Lisa (Alan) Revercomb; Gregory & Barbara Steele of Shreve and son Greg (Stacy) Steele, daughter Sherry (Ron) Warden, Shaun (Elizabeth) Hite; Robin (Steele) & Rodney Biddle of Wooster, daughter Lesley, son Brian; and Jeffrey Steele of Charlotte, NC., as well as several grand nieces, nephews and cousins all so close to his heart and also by his devoted dog, Princess.
