WOOSTER – Nydia Maciques Roque, 84, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2015, at West View Healthy Living retirement community, surrounded by her immediate family.
Nydia was born in Cárdenas, Cuba on February 23, 1931, to her parents Pedro and Maria Maciques, both born in Cuba.   Nydia went to La Progresiva Presbyterian School, also in Cárdenas.   After graduation she attended college in Emporia, Kansas to learn more English and then completed her Bachelor ™s degree at Havana University.   She was also an alumna of Kent State University, graduating with a Master ™s degree in education in order to teach Spanish in the United States.  
In 1955 she married her high school boyfriend Oscar A. Roque who preceded her in death in 2002.   Nydia and Oscar had a wonderful family and are survived by their sons Oscar J. (Cheryl) and Alfredo œFred  M. (Shanna), their six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  
Nydia was a well-known teacher in the greater Wayne County community and, after retirement, continued to offer her language skills and expertise in education to various organizations such as Apple Creek Elementary and the Viola Startzman Free Clinic, among many others.   She was also a long-time, active and much loved member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wooster.  
Friends are welcome to attend a memorial service to honor Nydia and celebrate the joy she brought to so many in her life on Saturday, June 20, at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Ave., Wooster.
