WOOSTER “ Phyllis Blair Clark passed away peacefully with her family at her side at West View Healthy Living, 1715 Mechanicsburg Road, Wooster, on October 28, 2015. She was 87 years old.
Phyllis was born on February 17, 1928 in Newbury, Ohio to James and Mildred (Luse) Blair. She was the oldest child in her family and was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard and a sister Marilyn (Morrison), and her husband ™s, Loy Clark and Lincoln Beardsley.
She is survived by her four children, Dennis (Susan) Clark, Lynn Clark (Elsa de Cardenas), Diane Moore (David), and Craig (Bobbie) Clark.
She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Jonathan Moore (Jennifer Gordon), Jennifer Schalliol (Felix Huang), Heather Mueller (Rick), Elizabeth Langbauer (Gabriel), Benjamin Clark (Kori-Ann), Jeffrey Clark, Sarah Clark; and her six great-grandchildren, Kate Blend, Unity Moore, Kiera Moore, Gordon Mueller, Alice Langbauer, and Ellen Langbauer.
Phyllis married Loy Clark of Lorain, Ohio in 1946. They were married for 31 years and raised four children together, especially enjoying cross-country camping trips with the family. On June 21, 1987, Phyllis married Lincoln Beardsley of Montville, Ohio. They enjoyed traveling and split their time between Wooster and Montville. Their homes were always open to family and friends.
Phyllis worked at the College of Wooster for three decades as Assistant Curator and Secretary of the Art Department. While she only briefly taught ceramics, she later became a well-known and beloved figure in the world of clay. In the early 1970s, Phyllis organized an annual exhibition of ceramics that she developed into a yearly workshop by 1974. Functional Ceramics has since then garnered international renown and continues to draw in artists from a variety of ages and stages in their careers. Phyllis was also a regular contributor to Ceramics Monthly and has been credited by many with inspiring and cultivating an entire generation of potters.
Phyllis was equally active and devoted in her family life, to her children and grandchildren alike. She will be remembered as an enthusiastic and generous individual who believed in the value of community and connection and who nurtured and shaped so very many lives.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill Street, Wooster.   Friends will be received 2 hours prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Phyllis Blair Clark Memorial Functional Ceramics Student Scholarship Fund and sent to Ohio Designer Craftsmen at 1665 W. Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43212.
