WOOSTER – Vera F. Dilgard passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at West View Healthy Living in Wooster, Ohio, where she had been residing for the past three years. She was 98 and was blessed with a long, beautiful life.
Vera Dilgard was born in Nashville, Ohio, on November 21, 1916. Her parents were John E. and Golda Weimer Miley. Vera graduated from Nashville High School in 1934. She was the valedictorian of her senior class. She received a B.A. degree from the College of Wooster in 1938, taking additional training in elementary education at Ashland University.
Vera was married to R. Emerson Dilgard on November 20, 1941, and they were happily married for sixty years. Vera began her teaching career in Pickerington, Ohio, where she worked as an elementary school teacher.
After marrying, she and her husband moved to Holmes County, where she was a public school music teacher in Holmesville, Ohio and Lakeville, Ohio. Emerson and Vera moved to Wooster, Ohio, in 1955. Vera took time off from her career to raise her young family, but returned to teaching after her youngest went to school and then taught fifth grade for seventeen additional years at Wooster Township Elementary.
Vera and her husband, Emerson, were very active in the Wooster community all of their adult lives. This caring couple were named Citizens of the Year by the Wooster Daily Record in 1995 and inducted into the Area Agency of Aging Hall of Fame for their community service and volunteerism.
Vera was a 35 year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers ™ Society, serving as music chairman for many years. She was a long time member of the Wooster United Methodist Church, singing in their choir for forty years, teaching children ™s Sunday school, as well as, participating and holding several offices in the United Methodist Women ™s Society. Due to her love of music and music education, she was a long-standing member of the MacDowell Music Club in Wooster and established the Dilgard Vocal Music Scholarship in 2002. This scholarship provides financial assistance to young, talented musicians in the community to continue their music education. The scholarship program is now named the Vera Dilgard Music Legacy.
Vera was a life member of the Wooster Hospital Auxilliary, serving as a board member and as a volunteer. Vera was an active member of the Salvation Army Auxilliary and the Wooster ™s Mothers ™ Club. She also volunteered for People to People Ministeries for many years. Vera loved to bake cookies and pies to share with family and neighbors and also loved to show off the flowers in her garden.
Vera is survived by her three children: Robert Dilgard of Cincinnati, OH, George (Susan) Dilgard of Birmingham, MI, and Jean (Douglas) Chamberlain of Saranac Lake, NY; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Matthew) Seitz, Jessica (David) Parrott, and Robert (Lea) Dilgard; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Colin and Eli Seitz and Alexandra Parrott; and nephews Roger (Janet) Pennell of Wooster, OH and James (Sharon) Pennell of Nashville, OH. She is also survived by dear friends and devoted, loving caregivers, Fran and Don Maibach of Wooster, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, Vera was predeceased by her faithful, loving husband, R. Emerson Dilgard, and her sister, Mildred Pennell.
There will be no calling hours, but a Celebration of Life service will be held in the chapel at West View Healthy Living, 1715 Mechanicsburg Road, Wooster, Ohio, on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Tobias officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception in the library following the service.
There will be a private family interment at Newkirk Cemetery in Big Prairie, Ohio.
