WOOSTER – John G. Beck passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at the age of 89. He was born December 11, 1919 in Johnstown, PA. His parents were Thomas H. and Mary J. Shiber Beck.
On October 15, 1941, he married Edythe M. DiPasqua at St. Mary Church. Two weeks after his marriage, Uncle Sam called him to serve during World War II. He served in the 34th Infantry (The Red Bull) Division, 185th Field Artillery Battalion. He earned 5 bronze stars (Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Po Valley and North Appenines campaigns). He served his country from 1941 to 1945 and spent 38 months overseas.
John was employed from 1939 until 1981 at Rubbermaid, Inc. in the shipping department. John was a member of the Orrville American Legion and Wooster Moose. John’s hobbies included ballroom dancing, fishing, and photography. John’s life-long philosophy was Integrity is everything.
John is survived by children: Bonnie (Mike) Franks of Wooster, Ron Beck, Gastonia, NC and Joan (Jim) Bonnell of Jeromesville. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother Joseph A. (Rosemarie) Beck and a sister Margaret H. Clark. Several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John is predeceased by Edythe, his wife of 63 years, sisters Mary Jane Flintosh, Josephine, Anna E. Portwood and brothers Thomas P., Vincent F., and Edward A.
There will be no calling hours.
A Service of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 1:00 P.M. at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster with the Rev. Father Stephen Moran officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
The family requests memorial donations to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County, St. Mary Building Fund, or the Wayne Co. Care Center.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Wayne County, Cambridge Home Health Agency, Wayne County Care Center and Dr. Matt Morris and his team at Wooster Community Hospital for the dignity they gave John in his final days.
