Karen Canankamp of Wooster passed away November 22, 2009 at Westview Manor after a brief battle with cancer. She was born December 19, 1941 in Portsmouth Ohio to Paul and Jeanette Walden Warden, and graduated from Wooster High School in 1959. She and David Canankamp were wed by the reverend Thomas Cromwell on March 19, 1969 at the united Methodist Church of Wooster, and they just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
Until 1969, she worked at the former Wayne County National Bank, and later attended Wayne College of the University of Akron for two years. She and her husband were co-owners of the D.C. Curry Lumber Company, and after her children were raised, she worked there. They retired in 1993, and since have split their time between their homes in Wooster and Lake Wales, Florida.
She and her husband were avid boaters for twenty nine years, and were members of the Nor?Easter and Crews Nest yacht clubs at Lake Erie. During their retirement they traveled extensively both domestically and internationally. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a fifty year member of the United Methodist Church of Wooster and a member of the Deborah Circle, and Saddlebag Lake Community Church. Over the years, she volunteered at Meals on Wheels and on various committees at her two churches. Her many passions included dancing, reading, playing golf and cards, walking her dog, and most of all, being with her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by children and spouses: Denise (Marty) Broda and Brent (Masae) Ellsworth of Wooster, Mark (Tina) Canankamp of Akron, and Jayne Crunelle of Forest Lakes, Arizona; siblings: Mike (Pam) Warden, Ron (Sherry) Warden, Leslie Middleton, and Brian Warden, all of Wooster; grandchildren: Stefan Bing of Lexington, Kentucky, Justyn and Zach Ellsworth of Wooster, Bethany and Angelica Canankamp of Akron, Colt (Lynette) Skinner of Glendale, Arizona and Shelby Crunelle of Forest Lakes, Arizona; three great-grandchildren: , many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Leah. She was preceded in death by her parents and father and mother-in-law, John and Olive Canankamp.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday November 25, 2009 in the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home 216 E. Larwill St. Wooster, Ohio 44691 with Revs. Dr. David Wilcox and Larry Black officiating. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm.
