WOOSTER – Lester Roy SHAMP, 86, of Wooster, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010 in his home with family by his side, after a long illness.
He was born October 21, 1923 in Wayne Co., the son of Durbin and Eva Levers Shamp. He graduated from Apple Creek High School and was a Sargent in WWII in the Field Artillary Division. He was a life-time member of the Apple Creek American Legion Post #147.
Lester was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, golf, fishing, camping and playing softball for the Wooster Lumber and Brenner Brothers Softball teams. He was a long-time member and past president of Wayne Coon Hunters Assoc. He loved playing cards with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
For many years, he, his father, brother and wife owned Shamps Meat Market in Honeytown. Later, he was a live stock buyer and managed and then owned Bechtol Packing in Orrville. After retiring from the meat business, he became a farmer and a realtor. During retirement, Lester enjoyed playing golf in Florida each winter.
Lester married Arlene E. Sprunger on January 29, 1944 in Augusta, Georgia while he was in the service. They have three daughters, Janet Richardson of Lancaster, CA, Jolene (Jeff) Meier of Reno, NV and Jill Shamp of Copley, OH. He has three granddaughters, Sheryl Quinton of Lancaster, Jessica Meier of Reno and Jana (Scott) Barclay of Reno. The great-grandchildren include Timothy Gabrielle and Sherielle of Lancaster, CA.
He is survived by siblings, Gladys Mullen of Apple Creek, Martha Whittier of Wooster and Delno Shamp of Fairview Park and Mary Starr of Lima.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ralph and Richard Shamp, sisters, Esta Snure and Estelle Gorsuch.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, on Wednesday evening, June 9, 2010 from 6-8:00 p.m.
Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jacqueline McMillen officiating. Interment will follow in the Apple Creek Cemetery, Apple Creek.
The family extends a special thank you to the Hospice workers who are such wonderful, knowledgeable and caring people.
