Robert Wayne Smailes (Bob) died Friday August 20, 2010 at the Horn Nursing Center in Wooster.
Services will be on Tuesday August 24 at 11:00 AM at Central Christian Church, 407 N Market St., Wooster with Rev. Kevin Phipps officiating. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday from 6:00 ? 8:00 PM at McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.
Robert Wayne Smailes (Bob) was born in Coshocton, Ohio November 8, 1934. He was the son of Joseph Willard and Gladys Elizabeth Shearn Smailes. On June 10, 1962 he married Ruth Marie Clevenger.
He was a 1952 graduate of Coshocton High School. He graduated from Muskingum College in 1956. In 1962 he was an N.D.E.A. fellow at West Virginia University where he successfully completed the course of study in Spanish offered by the University Summer Language Institute. In 1965 he was awarded a Master of Arts in Romance Philology.
He taught Spanish and History for 33 years at Roscoe, Plainfield, and Riverview High Schools in Coshocton, Ohio, Grandview High School in Columbus, Ohio, Dover High School in Dover Ohio and Hiland High School in Berlin, Ohio. In 1990 Bob retired from teaching after 22 years at Hiland High School.
In 1978 Bob graduated from the Reppert School of Auctioneering and Live Stock Judging and Pedigree Study in Decatur, Indiana. He was licensed as an apprentice auctioneer in 1978-1979.
He was a member of the Coshocton Church of Christ and the Coshocton Trinity Episcopal Church. He attended St. James Episcopal Church in Wooster, Ohio for 20 years. He had been a member of the Coshocton Elks and the Wakatomica Lodge No. 108 of the Masons of Ohio.
In 1974 he was selected as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America in recognition of contributions to the advancement of secondary education and services to the community.
In 1987 Bob was elected a member (honorary) of the Edelweiss Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, membership in which is based on Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character.
In 1988 he received an Award of Excellence in recognition of being named a ?Jennings Lecture Scholar? for 1987-1988 as a representative of East Holmes Local Schools.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, a sister Phyllis Lee Smailes-Davis of Columbus, Ohio, three children: Robert Patrick Smailes of Apex, North Carolina, Roger Phillip Smailes of Wooster, Ohio and Paula Sue Smailes of Worthington, Ohio and five grandchildren: Emily, Ian, Devin and Cameron Smailes of Apex, North Carolina and Leah Adrianne Smailes Gonzolez of Worthington, Ohio and a faithful Dachshund dog Oskar.
