WOOSTER ? Virgil H. Ward, 90, of Wooster passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 on the farm he always loved and lived on for 88 years.
He was born in Akron on April 6, 1920 the son of Fred and Clara (Lawrence) Ward and moved to Wayne County at the age of two.
He served his farming community in many ways. For 45 years he was a volunteer fireman and later served on the official board for the New Pittsburg Fire/EMT Department. He was a Chester Twp. Trustee and drove a school bus. He was attended the Church of the Saviour.
He was a well known Chester Twp. Farmer and helped run the Ward Chicken and Poultry Farm. He raised chickens, cattle, hogs and crops. Virgil was also an agricultural mechanic. He loved his pet dogs and cats. A very active sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and trap shooting. He played slow pitch softball and baseball. Virgil was an avid bowler until he was 90 years old.
He enjoyed building models and restoring antique cast iron peddle tractors.
He is survived by his wife, Karoline (Maurer-Casey) Ward; step-children Nora (Richard) Wineland, Stanley (Jill) Casey and Mark (Millie) Casey; 7 step-grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren; a brother Richard of Wooster, sisters Florence Cardello of California, Virginia Young of Amhurst and Linda (Robert) Flickinger of Wooster and a special niece, her husband and great-niece Diane (Roger) and Mary Baker and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Treva (Kolp) Ward and a sister Dorothy Weygandt.
The family would like to thank Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne Co. for their support and care during this time.
Friends may call Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Church of the Saviour, 480 Fry Rd., Wooster and 1 hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. service on Monday, September 13, 2010 with the Rev. Dr. Brent Durham officiating. Burial will follow in the Reedsburg Cemetery.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family with arrangements.
