WOOSTER ? Emil W. Baxstrom, 92, of Wooster, passed away on Saturday evening, September 25, 2010 at Akron General Medical Center due to complications following hip surgery. He was born on March 28, 1918 in Rolla, ND to Swedish immigrants Nels and Anna (Jonsson) Baxstrom.
Emil was raised on a farm in Mylo, ND. He graduated in 1941 from the University of North Dakota with a degree in accounting and was enrolled in ROTC. Following graduation he entered the Army and taught Military Science and Tactics at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio and Montana State University. Later he served as an instructor and administrator of the Army Specialized Training Program at Stanford University. Emil served 2 more years after WWII, stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington and the Philippine Islands.
Emil was happily married to Margaret J. Baxstrom of Ohio for nearly 67 years. They met at church while Emil was stationed in San Antonio, Texas and were married soon after on July 10, 1943 in Palo Alto, California. After living in California, Tacoma, Washington, Denver and Seattle, they settled in Wooster.
Emil was a successful homebuilder in Wooster and the Akron area, completing his last home at the age of 79. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for nearly 60 years. Emil was interested in history, particularly the Civil War and World Wars 1 and II. He also enjoyed traveling in the United States and other countries, especially visiting his relatives in Sweden. But his greatest joy was his wife, with whom he spent his happiest years along with his 5 children and many grandchildren.
Emil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret, on March 9, 2010; son Ted Baxstrom; 4 brothers, Clarence, Vernon (Lena), Arnold and Glenn (1st wife Mary and 2nd wife Kay) Baxstrom; 3 sisters, Ruth Baxstrom, Alma (Adam) Diller and Ida (Ralph) Friedly. He is survived by his sister-in-law Alvida (Arnold) Baxstrom.
Emil is also survived by: son Sandy (Jerri Lynn) Baxstrom of Wooster and their children Greta (Brian) Hoostal, Jorn (Amy) Baxstrom, Erik Baxstrom and Jay and Jordan Vincent; daughter-in-law Kathleen (Ted) Baxstrom of Seattle, Washington and their children Megan (John) Parkinson, Katie (Dave) Dosen and Michael Baxstrom; son Jack (Janice) Baxstrom of Wooster and their children Ashley, Bryce and Kelli Baxstrom; daughter Margie (Jim) Jones of Wooster and their children Andy (Andrea), Melanie, Christy and Danny Jones; daughter Kim (K.E.) Webb of Harrison, Tennessee and their children Natasha (David) Ballard and Holly (Brandon) York. Emil also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and former daughter-in-law and friend Deborah Baxstrom Reed.
Private family burial services will be held at the Wooster Cemetery. A memorial service with Rev. Andries Coetzee officiating will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mackey Hall), 353 E. Pine St., Wooster. The family will greet friends after the service.
