WOOSTER – Eugene R BEEM, 90, of Wooster, passed away Monday, February 21, 2011 in West View Manor Nursing Home.
He was born February 25, 1920 in Canton, the son of Hollis S and Ethel Mae Love Beem.
Eugene graduated from the Canton McKinley High School, The College of Wooster and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army for 4 years during WWII.
He began his teaching career first at Kalamazoo College, then at the University of California, Berkeley. As a result of research there, he went to New York City as a V.P. Economist for the Sperry and Hutchinson Company. As a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, he spent a week in residence at many colleges around the country bridging the gap among faculty, students and the community. He had been an Alumni Trustee at the College of Wooster and a Trustee at Pikeville College.
He went back to full time teaching later in life and held the first Charles Spahr Chair in Business Ethics at Baldwin Wallace College. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and taught adult classes there for many years. He loved baseball. He was a true gentleman and a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are wife, Mary Jane Benson Beem, whom he married June 30, 1945; daughters, Carol (Gary) Thompson of Wooster and Amy Beem Phillips of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a son-in-law, Bruce Beem-Miller of Ithaca, New York, grandchildren, Micah, Amanda, Jeffrey Beem-Miller, Alexandra Beem Phillips, Andrew (Stephanie) Meredith, Christopher Thompson; great-grandson Davis Robert Thompson.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Margaret Beem-Miller, a son, William Beem, a granddaughter Laura Thompson and a sister, Marguerite Watrous.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Pascal officiating. Friends will be received at the Church one hour prior to the service and following the service.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
