WOOSTER – Gurcharan Singh Bains, 94, passed away on February 26, 2011 at Akron City Hospital.
Born in 1916 in India, he was a Food Technologist and played a key role in making India self sufficient in food grains. He started work at the Central Food Research Institute, Mysore, India and then started and headed the Department of Food Science and Technology, at Punjab Agriculturial Institute in Ludhiana, India. After moving to the US in 1988, he worked for a year at the OARDC in Wooster as a consultant.
Married since 1944, he is survived by his devoted wife Surjit, loving daughters Rajindar and Amrita and son Harvindar. His son’s in law are Kulender Singh Mathoda and Gurpratap Singh Takhar. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Ranjit Singh Mathoda, Nachel Kaur Mathoda and Karan Singh Takhar.
He will be missed by his family, his colleagues and by his friends.
