Margaret (Peg) T. Heckendorn, 84, formerly of Wooster, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Blacksburg, Virginia, after a period of declining health. Burial was at the Wooster Cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday, April 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Black officiating.
Peg?s husband of 60 years, Edward B. Heckendorn, Jr., passed away in December 2010. Surviving are her two sons, Ted A. Heckendorn (Ann) of Beavercreek, Ohio and Steven E. Heckendorn (Nancy) of Christiansburg, Virginia, and three grandchildren, Emily, Wesley, and Kathryn. Peg?s brother, Daniel G. Hale, Sr., died in 2007.
Born May 4, 1926, in Tiffin, Ohio, Peg was the daughter of Earl N. and Esther E. (Reichert) Hale. Raised in Marion, Ohio, Peg graduated from Harding High School in 1944. While majoring in elementary education at Ohio Wesleyan University, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and met her future husband, Ed Heckendorn from Massillon, Ohio. After graduating in 1948, Peg taught third and fourth grades in the Marion and Wooster City Schools. Married on August 5, 1950, Peg and Ed settled in Wooster where they would live until 2005 when they moved to Virginia to be near their son, Steve.
In Wooster, Peg was active in the Wooster United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women, Junior Women?s Guild, 20-30 Anns, and the Kiwanis Club Auxiliary. She had a passion for travel and maintained an interest in the U.S. presidents that was inspired by her father?s hobby of the presidents. For many years Ed and Peg enjoyed summer vacations at Lakeside, Ohio and autumn weekends at Mohican State Park.
Most of all, Peg was dedicated to her family. She instilled kindness and generosity in her loved ones, and they will hold her memory dear.
Those who wish may contribute in Peg?s memory to the Wooster United Methodist Church, 243 Market Street, Wooster, OH 44691, or to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
