WOOSTER – Bernice Carrie WALTERS, 88, of Wooster, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 in West View Manor Nursing Home.
She was born April 11, 1922 in Sharon Valley near New Philadelphia, Ohio, daughter of Robert C. and Carrie Prysi Shakleford. She married Harold E. Walters of New Philadelphia on Septemer 7, 1947. He survives.
Bernice was a graduate of New Philadelphia High School class of 1940 and Beckwith Business College, New Philadelphia, with a degree in Accounting.
Bernice worked in Accounting at the Metropolitan Brick Co., Canton, OH and for the LeVeque-Lincoln Tower Company, Columbus. In Wooster, she worked for the William Annat Co. in accounting and sales. She then worked for the Wooster High School, beginning as a study hall aide, then transferred to Administration as the Student Registrar, retiring in 1985.
Bernice was a long time member of Oak Chapel United Methodist Church of Wooster. She was instrumental in starting the present Sing-Mar Sunday School Class, she directed an after school Story Hour and a Children’s Choir. Bernice provided leadership in the Susannah Circle and the Oak Chapel United Methodist Women. She also served as President of the then Wooster District United Methodist Women. She served as Financial Secretary and was employed as Church Secretary.
Bernice also served in various positions of leadership in community organizations as the West Lincoln Way Garden Club, The American Legion Auxiliary, the Legion Eight and Forty, Wayne Co. Chapter of School Employee Retirees of Ohio (SERO) and the Mothers’s Cum Laude Club of Wooster.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her children Robert A. (Marion May Haskell) Walters of Woodridge, Illinois and David L (Haydee B. Tumbaga)Walters of Lynnwood, Washington; 4 grandchildren, Ashley Nikki and Ryan of Woodridge, Illinois, Michelle of Almeda, California and Christopher of Lynwood, Washington; a sister, Kathleen I. (George) Patterson of Washington, Michigan.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Dean E. Walters and sisters Dorothy Metzger and Ruth Hawk.
Services will be held at the Oak Chapel United Methodist Church, 4203 W. Old Lincolnway, Wooster, on Friday, April 8 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Paul Farren officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia.
Friends will be received at the at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, Thursday, April 7, from 6-8 PM and one hour prior to the services at the church.
