WOOSTER – Thomas W. PURDY, 90, of Wooster, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011 in Wooster Community Hospital.
He was born March 5, 1921 in Killbuck, the son of Thomas Wiley and Jessie Underhill Purdy. He married Dorothy Van Sickel on August 9, 1941. She survives.
He had worked for the State of Ohio as a Time Clerk for 14 years, he started The Veterans Service Center in Holmes County and served as its officer for14 years. He was a member of Central Christian Church and had taught Sunday School for 25 years. Thomas enjoyed woodworking, camping, had been involved with Little League, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Was a life member of the Killbuck VFW and the Millersburg American Legion and had served as a past president of Ohio Veterans Service Officers Association and was their State Chaplain for 9 years. Served his country with the US Army during WWII where he was a forward observer in the 97th Infantry in the European Theatre, South Pacific and Japan..
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Russell (Judy) Reed of Coshocton, Randy (Dottie) Purdy of Wooster and Gary (Romaine) Purdy of Brunswick;10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Geraldine Best and brothers, Jack Purdy and Bernard Bud Purdy who was killed furing WWII.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, on Thursday Evening, August 4, 2011 from 6-8:00 p.m.
Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev’s Kevin Phipps and Eric Fairhurst officiating. Entombment will follow Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum..
