Eugene Allen Buehler (Gene), 82, peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 20, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio on April 6, 1929 to Ed and Helen Buehler. In 1932, the family moved to Wooster and opened their second Buehler?s Market location. Gene graduated from Wooster High School in 1947. He then attended Bowling Green State University where he met and married the love of his life, Joan Marie Elmore, his wife of 61 years who survives him.
Gene was active as a lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ. He was a fifty-five year member of Wooster Rotary Club, serving as President from 1981-82. In 2007, Gene and his brother, Don were recognized as Co-Businessmen of the Year by the Wooster Chamber of Commerce, and both inducted into the Ohio Grocers Hall of Fame by the Ohio Grocers Association. He also served as director on the board of Westfield Insurance Company and Peoples Federal Bank.
Gene held a deep appreciation for nature; especially the Secrest Arboretum. Throughout his life he planted thousands of trees. He was also an accomplished woodworker, creating anything from furniture to wooden bowls on his lathe.
Gene is survived by his wife, Joan, and their five children: Cindy (Jim) Webster of Orrville, Linda (Rick) Lowe of Wooster, Dan (Lynn) Buehler of Wooster, Lori (Jim) Fishburn of Wooster and Scott (Mona) Buehler of Wooster. Gene has fifteen grandchildren: Robb Webster of Los Angeles, CA, Erin (Pete) Downman of Sydney, Australia, Sara (Sergio) Gutierrez of San Francisco, CA, Emily (Eric) Mailaender of Brooklyn, NY, Elizabeth (Jason) Kleinsmith of Denver, CO, Adam Lowe of New York, NY, Julie Buehler of Girdwood, AK, Melissa Buehler of Bishop, CA, Kelsey Buehler of Sacramento, CA, Rich (Rachael) Fishburn of Wooster, John (Tomo) Fishburn of Chicago, IL, Joe Fishburn of Chicago, IL, Christopher Buehler of Maastricht, The Netherlands, Jordan Buehler of Cleveland, OH and Lanna Buehler of Charlottesville, VA. Gene has five great-grandchildren: Stephanie Downman, Isabella and Max Gutierrez, Stella Mailaender and James Fishburn.
He is also survived by his sister, Eileen Cross and brother, Don (Shirley) Buehler all of Wooster. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wayne Buehler.
A public memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 150 E. North Street in Wooster.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Gene to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne Co., 2525 Back Orrville Rd., Wooster, the Wooster Rotary Foundation, 505 N. Market St., Wooster or to the charity of your choice.
