WOOSTER ? William J. Hughes, Jr., 86, of Shreve died Thursday, November 3, 2011 surrounded by his loving family at the Wayne Co. Care Center.
He was born April 1, 1925 in Washington Court House, Ohio, the son of the late William J. and Mildred Jane (Emerine) Hughes.
He graduated from Shreve High School in 1943. He was a US Navy veteran serving in WWII aboard the USS Craven. Honorably discharged on March 2, 1946 and married the late Patricia R. Burnett Hughes.
He worked for Shreve Construction and had a gas and fuel route in the Wooster and Shreve Area. He retired as the Wayne Co. Highway Superintendent after 25 years of service. He loved to hunt, trap, fish and support athletics.
He and his wife owned and operated the Hughes Restaurant in Shreve. He was the head cook for Colorado Wilderness Safaris based in Gunnison where no one left his tent hungry. He was a life member and past Exalted Ruler for the Wooster Elks Lodge as well as heading many committees. This was an organization he took pride in and loved deeply. He was a life member of the Shreve American Legion Post 67 where he carried the colors leading 35 consecutive Memorial Day Parades in Shreve and Nashville, OH. A friend of many and enemy of no one, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are children: Jackie (Ed) Salisberry of Wooster, Brett (Paula) Hughes of Shreve and Jerry (Tina) Hughes of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Jason Hughes, Heather Bray, Adam Salisberry, Jana Clancey, Jed and Josiah Hughes; great-grandchildren Kaden Salisberry, Will Clancey, Darby Clancey and Lydia Bray.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia R. Hughes, grandson Luke Hughes and a sister Jane Wile.
Calling hours will be Sunday, November 6th from 3-6 p.m. at the Schlabach Funeral Home in Shreve, OH and a family graveside service will be Monday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Priscilla Jackson officiating.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
