Hugh E. Bay, 99, of West Salem, Ohio, formerly of Pleasantville, Ohio, died Friday March 1, 2013, at Wooster Community Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio, to T. Garl and Clara (Hughes) Bay on March 1, 1914. He was raised by his grandparents, Arch and Lydia Bay, after his mother died when he was four years old. He married Ellen Yeazel in 1939. After serving as a cook in the U.S. Navy during World Way II, he joined his father in the grocery business in Lancaster and added home butchered meats from the farm south of Pleasantville. He operated the meat plant and grocery and farmed until he retired. He is survived by sons Thomas Bay of Washington, D.C., and James (Cynthia) Bay of West Salem, with whom he lived for the last eight years. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jessie (Paul Charlton) Bay of Norwich, Vermont, and Ross Bay of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife and by a brother, Cloice Bay. There will be no calling hours. Family will have a private burial of the cremains at Forest Rose Cemetery in Lancaster.
