WOOSTER “ Gene Phelps, 78, of Wooster passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Wooster Community Hospital. He was born September 2, 1934 in Somerset, Kentucky, the son of Elmer and Lottie Smith Phelps. He married Mary Thompson on April 16, 1966. She survives. He was the owner and operator of Tru Color Litho retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Gene loved gardening, genealogy, animals and helping people. He had lived in Indiana until 1969 and then moved to Ohio. Served his country with the US Air Force where he was a guard dog handler Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, James (Donna) Phelps of Medina, Sue Phelps of Cleveland and Carol Jean (George) Collins of Denver; grandchildren Shawn Phelps and Jacob Phelps both of North Royalton, James (Brianna) Phelps of Wadsworth; great-grandchildren James Kane Wallner and Lauren and Collin Phelps; his siblings Vonice Phelps and Claria Richards of Florida and Barbara Lockhart of Texas; several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Bobby Phelps. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1388 Liahona Dr., Wooster on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with Bishop David Benfield officiating.. Private burial will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. Those who wish may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
