WOOSTER – Edwin Dreese Freed, 94, of Wooster, formerly of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, died December 12 at his home. He was born in Beavertown, Pennsylvania, on November 29, 1920, son of Edwin R. and Mary E. Dreese Freed. On December 19, 1943, he married the former Anna Marie Wetzel, who survives. They were married seven days less than 71 years.
After receiving a B.A. degree from Gettysburg College in 1943, he earned a B.D. from Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary and a Ph.D. in Classics in the special field of Biblical and Patristic Greek from Harvard University. Ed served as pastor of the Lutheran church in Loysville, Pennsylvania, for over two and a half years. He was a Distinguished Professor in the religion department of Gettysburg College for 36 years. He was an inspiration to many and, after his retirement, continued his study and writing, authoring 10 books and numerous articles in professional journals.
Ed was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church in Smithville since 1988. Prior to that, he was a member of Christ Lutheran church in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
As a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the International Society of New Testament Studies, he and Ann attended many annual meetings in the U.S. and abroad. Ed and Ann enjoyed traveling and over the years visited all but two states and 18 foreign countries.
Edwin is survived by his wife Ann and his daughters, Julie Gitt and Jane Roberts, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
At Ed ™s request, there will be no services. A private burial will take place in Wooster Cemetery. McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
