Herbert W. Long, 90, of Wooster, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Wooster Community Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born May 6, 1924 in Mantua, Ohio, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Beecher) Long and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1942. In 1947 he received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Ohio State University. On June 9, 1946, he married Eleanor Jean Fisher in the Wooster United Methodist Church.
Herb was a member of the Apple Creek United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member for many years and oversaw the construction of the Fellowship Hall. He served as the Scoutmaster of Apple Creek Boy Scout Troop 69 and he and Jean were members of the Wooster Garden Study Club for many years. They enjoyed traveling all over the world and attending their children ™s and grandchildren ™s many activities. Herb also played a large part in both building and remodeling his own, and his families ™, homes.
Herb belonged to the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and worked first for the American Bridge Company. Later he became the Chief Engineer at United Steel Fabricators in Wooster and became a partner in Engineering Associates, from which he retired.
Herb is survived by his wife, Jean; his seven children, Fred (Jody) Long, Bill (Jeannie) Long, Barbara (Eric) Lanier, Jim (Esther) Long, Rich (Roxann) Long, Charlie (Robin) Long, and Don (Paula) Long; eleven grandchildren, Beth Long, Andy Lanier, Geoffrey (Laura) Long, Amanda (John) Kidd, Phil (Emily) Lanier, Jamie (Casey) Cicconetti, Jesse Long, Phoebe Long, Chloe Long, Patrick Long and Emily Long; four great-grandchildren, Sam Lanier, Eliza Lanier, Vivian Kidd, and Zoe Long; a sister, Mildred West; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, George Long, Florence Long, and Josephine Gilbert.
Services will be held at Apple Creek United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 4, at 3pm, with Pastor Ken Curren officiating. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the funeral. Internment will be at Wooster Cemetery. McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
