WOOSTER – Elaine Smith Snyder was born November 25, 1949 in Morristown, NJ to The Reverend Dr. and Mrs. William A. Smith. She moved to Brookville, PA and was raised in Meadville, PA. She graduated in 1967 from Meadville Area Senior High School and from Ashland College in 1971 with a degree in Comprehensive Business Education. She was married to D. Lynn Snyder from 1971-2002 and had two children, Douglas Hanford Snyder and Karen Jean Snyder. Her children were the loves of her life, bringing joy and daily gratitude.
Elaine worked at The Ohio State University in the Dean of Students Office before accepting a teaching job at Whetstone High School in Columbus. After moving to Wooster in 1973 she worked at The Agricultural Technical Institute, Dr. Brian R. Lacey s dental practice, substitute teacher for Wooster City and Wayne County Schools, and retired from The College of Wooster in 2013 after working 22 years in the Libraries Special Collections Department.
An active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1974, Elaine was an ordained elder and deacon. She taught Sunday School, served on various committees, chaired the BorderLinks committee and sang in the choir. Elaine was on the board of One-Eighty RISERS serving as membership and volunteer coordinator. She also served as volunteer coordinator for the annual Break the Cycle bike benefit to bring awareness to the stigma of addictions. In 2015 she became a Hospice Volunteer bringing comfort to those at end of life. Elaine was recognized by Rotary International with the Paul Harris Fellow in 2016. As a non-Rotarian she received this for service to the community. She enjoyed her women s luncheons and euchre groups. She looked forward to annual hiking trips to Ghost Ranch at Abiquiu, NM as well as her annual family reunions at Smith Mountain Lake.
Elaine is survived by her children Douglas Hanford (Jacqueline) Snyder of Canton, OH; and Karen Jean Snyder of Cleveland, OH, and grandchildren, Eleanor and Owen Snyder. Her siblings are Marilyn (Graham) Johnstone, Beverly (Keith Dix) Lacey, Ralph (Faye) Smith, and Katherine (John) Mayers. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Elaine s parents preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in Mackey Hall at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 353 E. Pine Ave., Wooster with the Rev. Dries Coetzee officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
