Samuel Shapiro, 99, of Longboat Key, Florida, formerly of Wooster, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2018. Born on October 29, 1918, he was the son of Jennie and Meyer Shapiro of Wooster.  
Sam was the husband of Ellen Levin Shapiro who passed away in 1983. He married Sally Gardner Shapiro, who passed away in 2014. He was father to a blended family: Steve Shapiro (Cheryl), Tom Shapiro (Debbie), Pam (Gardner) Wolf, Jill (Gardner) Joseph and Judd Gardner. Sam ™s legacy continues in the love of his nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Sam graduated from The Ohio State University. After serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, he returned to Wooster and joined his father at Wayne County Iron and Metal.   Sam was the founder of Wayne Steel. Over the next 35 years as president, he led the company through its transformation into one of the most successful businesses in Wayne County. He also established Metallics Recycling, Summit Steel and Akron Rebar.
Sam contributed to the economic and humanitarian viability of the Wooster area through his personal philosophy of giving back to the community. While residing in Wooster, Sam served as president of the Wooster Rotary Club, the YMCA, Boy ™s Village, Wooster School Board, and Knesseth Israel temple.   He was a major contributor to the Ellen Shapiro Natatorium and spearheaded fundraising campaigns for the Wayne Center for the Arts, the American Cancer Society, and many other worthy organizations.  
In recent years, Sam and his wife, Sally, become known as philanthropists in the Sarasota area, giving generously to The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and building the Sally and Sam Shapiro Babies and Children ™s Medical Center at the Glasser Schoenbaum Human Services Center.
Sam was predeceased by sisters Ida Guttman and Rosabell Caplan.
Sam enjoyed traveling the world, a good bridge game, spending time with family and friends and living each day to the fullest.
He will be remembered by his family not only for his love of them but also for his love of community. His charitable contributions and leadership were an example to everyone who knew him.  
A funeral service will be officiated by Cantor Beth Friedman Rommell on Tuesday, February 20, at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Bradham, & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee (jfedsrq.org) or Glasser Schoenbaum Human Services Center, Sally and Sam Shapiro Babies & Children ™s Medical Center (gshumanservices.org).

Service
Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, with Cantor Beth Friedman Rommell officiating. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery.

Visitation
There will be no Calling Hours.
