WOOSTER Dr. Michael A. Yacapraro, DVM, 78, of Wooster passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Yacapraro would have reached his 79th birthday on May 15.
He was born May 15, 1939 in Wooster, the son of Anthony Francis and Elizabeth Ann Miletto Yacapraro. He married Mary Jane Wallace on December 21, 1964. She survives.
Michael graduated from Wooster High School in 1957 and from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1966. He served in the Army Reserves for 4 years following graduation from high school. Dr. Yacapraro and his wife, Jane, opened the Wooster Animal Clinic in 1968. He cared for large and small animals. Close friends and staff often referred to him as Doc .
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, one of the founders of the Wayne Co. Humane Society, was Wooster Citizen of the year in 1997, was an NRA member, a member of the Republician party and a supporter of Triway Schools. He also was a participant of the veterinarian team at the Iditarod in Alaska for three years.
Michael loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He had a vast amount of knowledge that he shared with others. He was an avid Ohio State fan and loved watching OSU football and wrestling. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, particularly fishing at the cabin in Canada which he owned with family and friends. He built his own cabin in Wooster with help from his sons and friends which his wife still resides in today.
He had a love for animals all of his life that continued into retirement. This was evident in the deep love he had for his mini schnauzer, Annie, and had a deep compassion not only for animals but helping others.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 54 years are his children, Jennifer (Scott) Raulston, Tony (Tracy) Yacapraro, Stephanie Rice and Mark (Heidi) Yacapraro; 14 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins; siblings, Carl Yacapraro, Elsie Wilson, Linda DiScipio, Susan Lang and Mary Ann Thorne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, mother and father-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 4-7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Monday, May 7, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 527 Beall Ave., Wooster with the Rev. Stephen Moran as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
