Chester Milton œChet  Smail, 91, of Wooster died Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Ohio ™s Hospice LifeCare.
Chet was born May 30, 1927 in Holmes County to Carl and Viola Enkemann Smail.   On November 5, 1949 he married Elizabeth œLiz  Tomassetti.   She survives.
After graduating from Big Prairie High School in 1944, Chet immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was trained as a surgical technician and was stationed in Aleutian Islands, Alaska.   Upon his discharge, he returned to Ohio where he worked for the Wooster Rubber Company. He then became the owner/operator of Smail ™s Sinclair Service Station on Spruce St. for over 10 years.   Following that, he attended Wooster Business College and received a degree in accounting. Chet had also attended Ashland College and the University of Akron.   He served as an accountant for Medal Brick and Tile, the City of Wooster and retired from Santmyer Oil Company.
Chet was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he was an usher for many years and a longtime referee for High School Basketball.   He loved traveling in his travel trailer and with Liz and his family. He visited 48 states, the Bahamas, eight European countries and Normandy American Cemetery in France.   He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson.
Along with his wife, Chet is survived by his son Robert (Denise) Smail of N. Canton; grandchildren Christine, Matthew, Kevin and Brian Smail; great-grandson Harrison Snodgrass along with many nieces and nephews.
Chet was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Ronald in 2007 and brothers Richard and Virgil Smail.
He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, and a great grandchild, and a special friend; Nancy Ballinger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 11:00AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 527 Beall Ave., Wooster with Father Stephen Moran officiating.   Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
