ORRVILLE – David Miller Maiwurm of Orrville, age 82, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2020.   A celebration of life service will be scheduled as able.
David was born August 7, 1937 in Akron, Ohio, the eldest son of Robert C. Maiwurm and Muriel E. Miller. He graduated from Orrville High School in 1955.   David worked various farm jobs through junior high and high school.   As an adult, he was always in the clothing business.   After high school he moved to Middletown, Ohio and worked as a clothier.   After a few years, he moved back to Orrville and started working with his father and brother, Roger, at Maiwurm ™s Clothing where he worked until he took early retirement due to heart complications in 1985.
David was born with a rare defect called transposition of the great arteries. Transposition changes the way blood circulates through the body, leaving a shortage of oxygen in blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Without an adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood, the body can’t function properly, and children face serious complications or death without treatment.   This condition ended David ™s mother ™s life at the age of thirty-five.   Fortunately, David lived in an era where the wonderful Cleveland Clinic was able to perform various surgeries to reverse this condition, install artificial valves and eventually a pacemaker, and give him 82 wonderful years of life with 61 years of marriage.   He lived life knowing he was given the incredible gift of time.
On May 24, 1958 David married his childhood best friend and love of his life, Mary Lee Weltlich.   They grew up three houses apart and spent their entire lives together. They resided in Orrville and grew their family with their two sons, Scott and Craig.   Being a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend were David ™s favorite roles in life.   He was also an avid hunter and field trialer of hunting dogs, as well as excellent trap shooter.   David said goodbye to the love of his life on November 8, 2019 when Mary Lee passed away.   The family takes comfort knowing they are now together again.
David loved following his grandsons ™ and granddaughters ™ sporting events and hearing about their adventures.   He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
David is survived by his two sons, Scott (Valerie) and Craig (Emily) and grandchildren, Travis, Jeremy, Trevor, Isabella, and Adaline along with brothers Roger (Elise) and Terry (Nancy) and sister Carol (John Brown) and their families.
The family would like to thank the staff at Danbury Senior Living and the staff at LifeCare Hospice for their outstanding care.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  1. Marvin & I would like to send our deepest Condolences to the entire Maiwurm family.
Not only was Scott one of my dear schoolmates, but Marvin always purchased his clothes from Maiwurms growing up as a teen.
Even my Grandfather purchased his clothes there as well, so many years to appreciate the Maiwurm Family.
God bless you during this time.

  4. I am just heartbroken over the loss of your father, Scott and Craig and families. So many years, so many happy memories of wonderful times with Dave and Mary Lee. Best dressed guy around town, always smiling, always picked out the most fabulous suits and outfits for Dan. We still laugh about your dad’s sense of humor and many funny sayings. What a wonderful legacy he has left behind with the two of you and your families…I enjoy being around you and always enjoyed hearing your dad’s stories about your growing up years. God bless you and picture them in heaven, Mr. Perfectly dressed and your sweet and loving mom.

  13. Although I am now a grandmother myself, I look back to the holidays spent at Grandma and Grandpa Maiwurm’s house with Uncle Dave and Cousins Scott and Craig as if they happened only yesterday. Dave was always full of life and loved to tease Grandma endlessly (as did Scott and Craig and all our ornery cousins) about what food she didn’t have, when she already had tables upon tables full of stuff everyone loved. Ha Ha! Dave would wink and say, “What, Eleanor, no green beans?!” when there was everything but green beans. The cousins always chimed in and added a new dish that was “missing” whenever we got together. His endless jokes around the table made us laugh more than we actually ate. As the cousins grew, if we brought a boyfriend (or girlfriend) to the festivities, you knew that Uncle Dave would tease them endlessly as if he’d known them all his life. He loved it when we got older and brought our spouses and kids so he could tell them how rotten we were as children. LOL. Some of my favorite memories as a little girl were when he would help Grandpa Maiwurm set up the train set on the pool table in the basement when he knew we were coming to town. I loved to look at all of his pictures and paintings of hunting dogs and I loved to visit his house to see his real dogs. My husband Mike always loved to have endless conversations with “Uncle Dave” when we were able to visit more frequently. I remember going to “the Store” (Maiwurm’s Clothing Store) and Dave would tell me to try on something new. He was proud to find something that he thought I might like. I knew he loved me as a little girl and as a young lady because he would always want to talk to me about what was happening in my life. He would look me in the eye and really listen (before bringing up a subject that would really stir things up – lol). To quote William Hurt in the Big Chill, he was “only trying to keep the conversation lively!” Dave loved to talk and Dave loved to listen. But most of all, Dave loved to laugh. It’s been many years since I heard that laugh, but the cherished memories as a little girl, a teen, and a young wife and mother, are still in my heart today. His smile lit up the room and Scott and Craig, I thank you for sharing your dad with me and my family. I always consider myself blessed to have been part of the Maiwurm family. I believe that the reason that I am so confident today despite all the pain and heartache in the world, is because I was loved so enormously at Grandma and Grandpa’s house by all my wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins. It is one of the reasons that I am able to give love so unconditionally to my own family, my students and others. The Maiwurm’s did make family a priority, but they never passed by a stranger without reaching out and I am who I am today because I had several generations before me that instilled my character in me and a deep love for my fellow human race. Scott and Craig, it is now our turn to influence the generations after us in the same loving way. I love you, Cousin Tracy (Maiwurm) Reyes

  14. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Maiwurm family. Knowing Dave since childhood and during his marriage to my sister Mary Lee, I basically reiterate what has already been said. Dave was a great part of a wonderful team with Mary Lee and was so proud, rightfully so, of the boys and loved the grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father and always found time to help others. Back with Mary Lee and they are trying to find a new place to have coffee. Love, the Weltlich’s
