Judith E. Stock, 80, of Wooster, died April 5, 2021, at her home. She was born in Johnstown, PA, on May 4, 1940, to Edwin D. and Elizabeth Love (Findley) Stutzman. She graduated from Conemaugh Twp. High School in Davidsville, PA, in 1958 and received a bachelor ™s degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962.
After teaching high school English in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Cleveland Public Schools, and in Canal Winchester, Ohio, she devoted herself to motherhood.   In 1973 she moved with her then husband, Charles, to Wooster, and in 1978, they set out upon an extremely ambitious homebuilding project where they, their children, and family friends disassembled an 1844 log house in Dalton, and moved it piece by piece to Shreve, where they reassembled it over the course of four years into a family home.
She was a determined entrepreneur, originating the sour cream fruit pies of the Pine Tree Barn as its first baker, weaving rugs which she sold at craft shows all over Ohio, and then, in 1989, founding Books In Stock Used and Rare Books, a Downtown Wooster institution.   She operated the store for 18 years until her retirement, and it remains a destination on East Liberty Street, now owned and operated by her son, Ben Stock.
Through her ownership of the bookstore, she became an early champion of the revitalization of Downtown Wooster. She was an active voice in Main Street Wooster, served on the Board of Trustees of the Wayne County Public Library, and in her retirement became an avid volunteer for People to People, the Viola Startzman Free Clinic, the Wooster Community Hospital and Democratic political campaigns.
She was a lifelong reader, deeply involved at Zion Lutheran Church, and baked and wove for the pleasure of her family throughout her life.   She would travel any distance to spend time with her beloved grandchildren, and will be sorely missed by all.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dr. E. Delroy Stutzman, Jr., her son, Charles Edwin, and her former husband Charles Stock.
She is survived by her children Meegan (Brendan Niemira) of Oreland, PA, Ethan (Rika) of Belmont, CA, and Ben (Amanda) of Wooster, OH, seven grandchildren, and sister Jeanne Weber of Hobart, WA.
Interment will be private, and a memorial service will be scheduled when gatherings can safely be held.

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss. Aunt Judi was always so kind and welcoming whenever we visited, although our visits were always too brief. I’m delighted that Isaac got to know her, and that Books in Stock continues. She was so proud of all her children and grandchildren. May your many happy memories come to outshine the sad ones.

  4. My sincere sympathy to all the children and grand children of the family. Judy was a fine person and I remember right now two important discussions we had, often at Health Point and at Democratic Hdq on Liberty Street. Before the pandemic, when she was on her way to visit her grandchildren, and the second our discussions about Democratic politics. Let me thank the writing of the obituary for including her work in Democratic political campaigns. Often people leave that out. I will miss Judy and pleased that Ben will carry on the name of Books in STOCK!

  7. Mrs Stock taught me high school English in the 1960s. She was an outstanding teacher. She taught me the enjoyment of reading and the importance of classical literature. This has given me much pleasure for many decades. I have always thought of her often over the years. My condolences to the family.

  9. So sorry for your loss. So many memories growing up with Meegan, Ethan, and Ben. Your mom’s sour cream apple pie was the best!! She brought it to the house when my grandpa passed away and I have been making it ever since. It is the only apple pie I like and it is requested from friends and family for me to make every fall.
