Lois Rubin Freedlander passed away peacefully at her home May 25th. She was the loving wife of Harold for 63 years and mother of 2 daughters, Mimi and Ann.
She was born in Cleveland on January 28, 1917 to Dr. and Mrs. Louis Rubin who took the streetcar to Mt. Sinai Hospital because of the blizzard on that snowy day.
She graduated from Flora Stone Mather Women’s College in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1930’s. Lois later met and married Harold on January 23, 1939 in Cleveland. They lived in Wooster for the remainder of their lives.
Lois was a lifelong member of Knesseth Israel Temple and Sisterhood. She was also a member of AAUW, a charter board member of Ohio Light Opera which continues to perform each year at Freedlander Theatre at the College of Wooster.
Lois’s many interests, contributions and her lifelong dedication to the community of Wooster will long be remembered.
Lois was blessed with many loving and devoted friends throughout her 104 years which she graciously shared with us all.
Contributions in her name can be made to the Ohio Light Opera, c/o the College of Wooster and/or LifeCare Hospice of Wooster.
The family wishes to thank her compassionate and loving caregivers, Crystal, Mary and LifeCare Hospice of Wooster.
There will be no public calling hours or service. There will be a private burial where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Harold.

We have so many wonderful memories of The Freelander store from the greeting at the entrance by Herman and Harold to going around in the revolving door, smelling the perfumes, the payment going up in the tubes, gift wrapping dept.,dollar days, visiting Santa Claus, and of course getting to go to toy land if we where good while our parents shopped.And all the SMILES and HELP we received from the Employee. We at Ohio Light Opera (OLO) are so terribly sad at Lois’ passing. Her charm, elegance, intelligence and humor will be missed by so many of her friends. Harold and she were instrumental in the success of OLO and we get to perform each year in Freedlander Theatre on the Wooster campus, reminded of your family’s generosity, care and love. I will miss greeting Lois at the door of the theatre. We are so very grateful for our time with her and we send you comfort and peace at this very difficult time.
Dear Ann and family, we are very sorry for your loss. Your mother was one of the “Grand Ladies of Wooster”. She was not only active in town but sweet and friendly whenever we met. Your family has been such an important presence and driving force in making Wooster the wonderful place we grew up and love. My deepest sympathies to Mimi, Ann, and the Freedlander family. It’s difficult to put into words how blessed I am to have known Lois over the past 30 years. We worked together on the Ohio Light Opera advisory board, where I discovered the importance of the Freedlander family, not just to OLO’s early years, but to the entire community of Wooster and Wayne County. Harold’s strong love for Gilbert & Sullivan and Lois’ support and contributions to this unique operetta repertoire has played an invaluable role in the over 40-year history of our company. What I remember most about Lois is her kindness, passion, perseverance, and wisdom. In recent years, I enjoyed seeing Mimi and Lois in the lobby of Freedlander Theatre. Lois never wavered in her commitment to OLO and in her steadfast generosity. This July, OLO will be rehearsing in Freedlander Theatre and performing Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury in the Wooster community. No doubt, the spirit of Lois, Harold, and Herman will be with us as we rehearse and perform.
Lois was a beautiful person and friend. Jim and I loved her so much. My deepest sympathy to her family.

We will forever miss our meals out with Lois and Mimi. She had fabulous stories of her amazing life, a ready laugh, endearing smile and a ready hug.

Mimi, I was at Westview Manor when your mother was there, if you remember me. She was such a nice person and was the bravest of us all when it came to getting on a bus to go to a flower shop. She was the only one to climb the steps while the rest of us got pushed up a ramp in wheelchairs. I liked her very much. Ann, I never met you. I hope God and fond memories comfort both of you.
My deepest sympathies to your family. She was such a sweetheart. She even made a special trip to see me at the Clinic to give me a photo of her and my Grandma Nina Patterson who were both golf buddies. She was a one in a million sweet ladies and I already miss her sweet smile.
