STERLING “ David Carl Maurer “ 78, of Sterling passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Wooster Community Hospital.
He was born July 20, 1943 in Wooster the son of Carl Whitaker and Greta Christable Yoder Maurer.   Dave had lived in Apple Creek until the age of 3 and then moved to the family Whitaker farm on Sylvan Road in Wooster.   He married Brenda K. Hartman on August 8, 1970.   She survives.
He was a 1961 graduate of Wooster High School where he played baseball and had worked Bogner Construction retiring in 2002.   David was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he enjoyed the lessons in Sunday school and treasured the many friendships with those who attend the church. After retirement he spent time volunteering for the Salvation Army in Wooster by driving kids to camp and picking up supplies.   He also spent time driving his friends to appointments when they needed a ride.
His love of sports carried on through his adult life where he enjoyed bowling, golf, and watching his children and grandchildren play sports.   He also loved to travel with his wife where they spent many years traveling and sightseeing by taking various cruise ships around the world.   His hobbies were gardening and landscaping and he could always be found working on a project outside in his yard.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1962 “ 1966.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children Wendy (Shawn) Simmons of Dalton and Brett (Jwana) Maurer of Smithville; grandchildren Brady Maurer, Chloe Simmons, Meileina Simmons, Damian Galehouse and Angel Parks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Marcus Maurer.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 7605 Pleasant Home Rd., Sterling with Rev. Steve Olsen officiating.   A private family burial will be held.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  2. I was sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Dave was my catcher my sophomore year at WHS. He was great and taught me a lot about pitching. We played summer baseball together and I learned more. I have great memories of him I hope the good memories you have will help during this time of sadness. Best wishes to you and the family. RIP Dave.

  5. I was very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Our family farm was next to the Maurer farm & Dave and I are about the same age. As kids, we would play in each other’s barns or woods & go sled riding at the County Home. Later, as adults, we worked together at Bogners. Dave was a really good guy & had a twinkle in his eye. Everybody seemed to like him & I’m sure he will be missed by Family & friends.

  6. The Maurer Family . Dave was a enjoyable person to have in my life . Weather it was Cavs, Browns game. Or working in construction industry . Glad to say Dave was a part of my life.
