WOOSTER- Douglas D MacMillan, 68, of Wooster, Ohio, died June 5, 2022, at his home in Wooster, with his wife by his side.
He was born February 13, 1954, to Dr. Howard C. MacMillan and Jean Dalzell MacMillan in Portsmouth, VA.
Doug graduated in 1972 from the Wooster High School and in 1977 from The College of Wooster after starting college at Marietta College in September 1972.
In 1984, he married Helen Krueger of San Antonio, Texas. They had 2 children, Grace and Dukehart.
After graduation, he started work at Red Head Brass. While at Red Head, Joe Fishelson took Doug under his wing and became Doug ™s lifelong mentor, teaching him about sales, marketing, and running a business. After working at Red Head for several years, Doug went on to work as the Assistant Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Imperial Fire Hose Company, in Miami, Florida, where he met his future wife.   He then went on to found/co-found several of his own businesses, MacMillan Fire & Safety, Action Coupling Equipment, and Camelback Fire. He retired a w few years ago when he sold his most recent business, but he continued consulting for several companies in the fire & safety business.
Doug was born and raised in Wooster, and although he lived various places throughout his life, he loved Wooster and he and Helen moved back to stay in 1990s. In Wooster, he was the longest serving member on the Board of Zoning Appeals as his co-members would not let him leave. He was an active member of the Wooster Country Club for many years. He traveled the world with his flight attendant wife, where he always received upgraded status and personalized attention.
Doug was surrounded in Wooster by friends, that in turn, he frustrated, annoyed, and delighted with his ever-present sense of humor and stories. He was an active member of a weekly book club, that never discussed a book; he always believed that stories were better embellished; he was an active and involved coach and fan of both his daughter ™s and son ™s lacrosse teams; he once beat his brother, Stuart, in golf; he had a summer job as a rodeo clown in Estes Park, Colorado; and if you called him, but he didn ™t answer, he would always get back to you propitiously. In high school he convinced his dad to allow him to buy an old milk truck where he could be seen driving around town until the truck was inoperable. Upon moving back to Wooster, Doug upgraded to a bright red convertible that was as noticeable as the Milk Truck. Doug, with his fashionable dress and generous personality even without Truck or Convertible, was always visible in the hearts and minds of the Wooster community.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Krueger MacMillan, of Wooster, Ohio, and his two children, Grace Townsend Samuals MacMillan of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Dukehart Houston Wingfield MacMillan of Scottsdale, Arizona; his brother, H. Stuart MacMillan of Fort Collins, Colorado; and his sisters, Dr. Megan R MacMillan of Lafayette, Colorado and Dr. Sara MacMillan Tonsing, of Pueblo, Colorado.

  1. Doug, you’ll always be a pal! I loved the time we spent together on and off the golf course, particularly on our back patio or at your house (cocktails in hand, of course:) I won’t forget your stories and the laughs we shared. When we meet again, fear not, I’ll let you win at pocket pool, even on your pool table. My favorite vison of you and “Miss Helen,” was when you both stepped into the party in LA, you in your beautiful kilt, on the occasion of the rehearsal dinner prior to our Shane’s wedding on May, 2009 at the Riviera Country Club. From one who knows, buddy, you were a unique character. RIP Doug. As my Shane would always say, “LOVE”

  4. The world will be a lesser place without Doug. I have known Doug since the day I was born! I always considered him a 5th brother. He was a much loved extension of our family in Wooster days, and came on all our Holiday Valley ski trips. Family and friends were everything to him. He was in for the long haul.
How blessed Megan, Sally and Stu are to have had such a loving, caring, thoughtful, fun, devoted brother, and for Helen to have such a devoted and generous husband.
I send all the Mac Millans my deepest, deepest sympathy, and warmest hugs. Doug was a huge gift to us all. I will miss him.

  5. For sure, Doug was a unique and fun-loving free spirit. He was a great sparring partner in any debate who made always made me laugh, think, and question myself. I remember him as the first and foremost at the party, yet a kind, true friend to all who knew him. He ardently grabbed everything life had to offer, a powerful lesson indeed. Gone much too soon. I raise a dram of Johnnie Walker Blue to ye, Doug

  6. Savoir faire. Probably the first adjective I would use to describe Doug. Also: smart, fun, and funny. He knew when the occasion called for a bit of flamboyance. If that was all you saw though, that was just the beginning.

Doug was a fantastic friend; the world was a wonderful place with Doug in it.

We send our love and deepest sympathy to Helen, Grace, and Duke and all the MacMillans.

  7. Helen, Duke and Grace, and all the MacMillan siblings, I send my sincere condolences to you all. Doug was a funny, exuberant and generous heart, and certainly added a lot of color to any conversation. His life was way too short, and his absence from your lives will be felt deeply for a very long time. I hold good memories of Doug, and wish you all the same. Peace be with you all at this time.

  8. Dear Helen, while we only talked with Bob a few times at the Wooster Country Club,he was a delight. We so enjoyed the wonderfully expressed obituary and learned even more about him. We also met you a few times and talked about our daughter, Jenny, a flight attendant for United and her husband a pilot.

We are so sorry for your loss, your special travel companion. May God give you warm hugs. May all the specil memories sustain you. M&C Brain

  10. Stu, Megan, and Sally, you and your brother and your parents helped steer me onto a good path when I was young. I’m so very grateful for the love and guidance that your family gave to me when we lived just up the street from you there on Sunrise View. Although your brother and I gradually drifted apart when we headed our separate ways off to college, when we subsequently ran in to each other, it was like old times again. Since I live and work in Norfolk, Virginia for the Navy, I’ve always thought of Doug and smiled when I had occasion to pass by the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. I was really looking forward to seeing Doug again and getting reacquanted with Helen at our upcoming 50th H.S. reunion.
Helen, Grace, and Duke and all the MacMillans, I want to extend my deepest sympathy for the loss of this fine individual, this fine example for us all. Yes, as Boo has said, Doug was a gift indeed to us all. I will really miss him.

  11. It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. Douglas, of course was one of my best friends. Recently, he came out to San Diego and stayed with us. It was wonderful seeing him and I am grateful we had that time together. I know he was very proud of his children and often spoke about them. this is such a shock, not sure what else to say. I need some time to grasp this news.
