“Together Again”

Richard O. Keener, 85, of Creston passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022 at The James Cancer Center in Columbus.

He was born June 23, 1937 in Wayne Co., Ohio to Russell and Ruth Ickes Keener.  On November 22, 1963 he married Sandra “Kay” Amos, she preceded him in death in 2021.

Richard had served his country in the U.S. Army.  He worked for Nu-Way Construction as a foreman and as a supervisor for over 50 years.   Richard ran the scoreboard for Northwestern football and basketball for many years. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Buckeyes, Indians, Browns and Cavs.  He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching his grandchildren’s activities, traveling and taking care of his lawn.

He is survived by his son Kevin R. (Joyce) Keener of Creston; a brother Phil (Jean) Keener of West Salem; sisters in law Nancy Keener of Wooster, Donna Jean Keener of West Salem; brothers in law Adrian Buchholz of Mansfield and Chet Welty of Medina; grandchildren Kolton and Kendra and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Karla Sue Keener, sisters Carol Buchholz, Marilyn Weygandt, Virginia Brenneman, Mavis Welty, Jane Keener and brothers John and Karl Keener.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 11:00AM at Mohican Church of the Brethren, 7759 N. Elyria Rd., West Salem, with Pastor Paul Bartholomew officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairhaven Cemetery.

Friends and family will be received on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, OH 44691

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Northwestern Athletic Department, 7473 N. Elyria Rd., West Salem, OH 44287

  5. Am sorry for Rich’s passing!! Condolences to all family and loved ones!! Remember Rich set shot where with both hands he push up ball old fascination way and was very accurate!! Remember in 1959 Northwestern Athletic Club played exhibition with Harlem Magicians and Rich kept hitting his shots successfully and Magicians on bech looked at each other in amazement!! Also remember Rich driving in Wooster in his 1955 Mercury!! Rich you were good guy!! RIP Jim Martin class of 1960
