Hans Dieter Tannhof of Wooster passed away at home surrounded by family on January 2, 2023 after battling a variety of health problems in the last year.

Hans was born October 20, 1942 to parents Heinrich and Elisabeth Tannhof in Göttingen, Germany. He immigrated to Wooster with his first wife, Anneliese (Viehmeyer) Caputo, joining his sister Irmgret (Gerhard) Soesemann and brother Reinhard (Edith) Tannhof.

Hans and Anneliese raised three children, Angela (Dorksen), Evelyn (Bowden) and Thomas Tannhof.

Hans married Marjorie (Dye) on August 5, 2000 and they made a wonderful team for the last 22 years creating a special blended family.

Hans is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters Angela (Aaron) Dorksen of Wooster and Evelyn (Chuck) Bowden of Columbus and son Thomas (Ashley) Tannhof of Wooster; step-children Kim (Rod) Aukerman of Wooster and Joy (Scott) Carlson of Monroe, Louisiana; grandchildren Nickolas and Doris Tannhof and Arch Dorksen; step-grandchildren Zach Bowden; Nathan, Josh and Kaitlyn Aukerman; Cole, Gage and Keegan Carlson; 3 step-great-grandchildren; and nieces Petra Soesemann, Annie (Fritz) Wise, Kathy Tannhof, Tina Moskal; and first wife Anneliese Caputo with whom he remained friends.

In addition to his parents, Hans was preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law Irmgret and Gerhard Soesemann; brother and sister-in-law Reinhard and Edith Tannhof and nephew Norman Tannhof.

Hans’ first job in Wooster was working at Gerhard’s Pastries, owned by brother-in-law Gerhard Soesemann.

Having completed a carpentry apprenticeship in Germany, Hans would go on to make his true mark in the workplace as one of the most respected finish carpenters in northeast Ohio while working for Bogner Construction from 1974-2005. Hans was a perfectionist as a carpenter and in life, insisting everything was done just right down to the last detail.

Hans enjoyed as much of America’s vast country and history as he could, whether it was going on whitewater rafting trips to West Virginia, or visiting sites such as Gettysburg, The Alamo, and NASA Space Center.

In addition to travel and carpentry, Hans’ interests ranged from always being ready for a family “Kaffeklatsch” gathering, watching soccer, James Bond and western movies, as well as being a long-suffering Cleveland Browns fan.

Hans and Marge always had a project going on at their home, helping out family members or friends, or planning their next trip. They enjoyed traveling to places like Key West, Germany and Italy.

What they loved most together was spending time with their big extended family.

In his final years, Hans (Opa) especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He loved attending their Boy Scout events, athletic contests and school activities.

The family is grateful for special care provided by Life Care Hospice.

Friends and family will be received Friday, January 6, 2023 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd, Wooster, OH, 44691; or Wayne County Humane Society, 1161 Mechanicsburg Rd., Wooster; or a charity of your choice.

  9. Our sincere condolences for the passing of a great man. Hans was a friend and honorable man we were proud to know. Our sons were in school together from grade school on. Hans and I had much in common and I recall taking him to the Leiderkranz in Mansfield for a Christmas party with my German customer Mike Volk. I recall Mike and Hans talking about where they were both originally from in Germany. We will miss Hans and never forget him.
