John Pierre-Michel Hugon, 81, of Wooster, OH died peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, January 29, 2023 after several years of battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Despite the effects of this terrible disease, he remained positive, always had a smile on his face and was very appreciative to have family and friends with him.

He was born January 15, 1942 in São Paulo, Brazil to Paul and Claire Hugon (nee Biniamovsky). On April 8, 1967, he married Karen Hugon (nee Shaw). She survives.

John attended the H.E.C. business school in Paris and graduated with an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He was an entrepreneur at heart, and worked in International Sales for both Rubbermaid and Seaman Corporation.

John had extensive interests and hobbies. He was an avid chess player and teacher, and had achieved the rating of Expert. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, downhill skiing, nature, trail hiking, reading, photography and traveling the world; he spoke several languages.

For over 25 years, John and Karen took wilderness trips to explore Canada’s Algonquin Park where they would canoe and hike for miles and miles, carting their gear from lake to lake. He was a naturalist who loved spending time on his property and thrived when working in the woods or his extensive garden.  He was fortunate to have golfed all over the world, and had been a member of the Mohican Golf League.  Most of all, he loved being with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Along with his wife, John is survived by his children Artur Hugon of Phoenix, AZ, Claire Hugon of Charlotte, NC and Paul (Jennifer) Hugon of Wooster; grandchildren John Lucas Hugon, Tyler Clarence Hugon, Jake Mahaffey, Cole Mahaffey and Cora Hugon; sister Catherine Hugon of Paris, France and a nephew Frederic Hugon. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family was very fortunate to have outstanding home healthcare support.  The family would also like to thank Avenue at Wooster and Crossroads Hospice for their excellent care and attention.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023 with calling hours at 1:00pm and funeral services at 2:00pm at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the ALS Association, PO Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037, or Crossroads Hospice, 3743 Boettler Oaks Dr., Suite E, Uniontown, OH 44685 or a charity of your choice.
