Roger James Reed, 82, of Wooster, passed away on Friday March 3, 2023 at Wooster Community Hospital.

He was born on his parent’s farm outside of Orrville July 21, 1940, the son of James and Nettie (Harrison) Reed. He was a proud member of Waynedale Highschool’s FFA chapter until his graduation in 1959. He was working with the FFA in preparation for the Wayne County Fair when he met the love of his life, Elaine.

He married Elaine Mellinger on March 4, 1960. This continued the foundation of the most important thing to him, his family. Roger defined success as family, raising strong children, and passing along family farming. He achieved all of this.

He was much loved by his children Brian Reed, Melinda Thomas (Ted Luc), Sharon Reed (Simeon Wright), and honorary daughter Ella (Chris) Chui; grandchildren Samantha (Cody) Timbs, Abigail Reed, Cameron Reed, Dakota Thomas, Mackenzie Thomas, Heidi Luc, Halie Luc, Helen Wright, Hazel Wright; and great grandchildren Aliya, Lyla, and Killian Reed and Octavius Timbs.

His love for family was also shared with his many nieces and nephews. In their early years, they would spend many days and nights on the family farm. As the years passed, these same nieces and nephews were often found talking around the kitchen table discussing life and sharing laughs.

Roger, a quiet and strong man, could always figure out a way to make something work. This was helpful along his life’s journey. He served in the Ohio National Guard from 1966-1972 when Ohio was experiencing tough times. He frequently repaired equipment on the farm, and he was a talented welder, building truck bodies for Stahl Manufacturing.

Family also meant great friends to him. He was part of two community groups (Farm Council and Loco Club). Every month they shared many laughs and conversations with those friends. They also played a lot of games and cards. He loved playing Euchre.

Faith and church were also very important to him. He joined Trinity United Church of Christ, Wooster when he and Elaine married. He served on Consistory, many committees, ushered, greeted, went on a mission trip and performed any other ‘as needed’ project.

He is survived by his wife, children and sister in law Eleanor Reed. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Roger, his parents, and siblings Helen (Paul) Allen, Richard (Clara) Reed, Alvin Reed, Ruth Petri.

You are welcome to come celebrate his life and share stories with family and friends during Calling Hours on Sunday March 12 from 3p to 5p or Monday March 13th from 10a to 11a. Funeral will be at 11a on Monday (13th). All activities will be hosted at Trinity United Church of Christ, 150 E North Street, Wooster.

The family would also like to thank the skilled and compassionate staff at Wooster Community Hospital. In leu of flowers, donations may also be made to Trinity United Church of Christ.

McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  4. So saddened to hear of Roger’s passing. Roger and Elaine were the first people to welcome my husband Richard and I back to Trinity 26 years ago and we feel truly blessed to know and love the Reed family. Roger was a quiet man and a devoted man to his family and church. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye. Meet you on the other side Roger. Blessings to Elaine and all of the family during this difficult time. Richard and Sharen Brigham

  9. My LOVE of GOD, ELAINE, to you and all the family!! I know that Roger is at PEACE now with the LORD, and probably he and
Ap (DOC APPLEMAN) are discussing the farm and cattle, or Roger is still worried about when that Rooster attacked me at age 6 (?)
( I was NOT even worried about it. Just brushed off the blood! (when with DAD on a farm call to attend Roger’s cows)

I know you, Elaine were concerned!

    You & ROGER: GREAT!! ALWAYSSSS
GOD is WITH all of you!! Look to the BRIGHT side of ROGER, and there is a LOT to see!!

    LOVE of GOD,

  10. Elaine and family, we send our condolences to you all especially your children! But I don’t think Roger would leave out any of those babies! We remember so many good times together! If Roger could read this he would laugh about the pumpkin pie I brought up to your house “with NO sugar” in it. Haven’t made one like it since!
Elaine, if you need ANYTHING just give us a call. Love you all!

  11. Even though Roger’s family wouldn’t really know us I wanted to send a note. Roger was in my Apple Creek School class, and Waynedale High School. We hardly ever saw each other except at a few class reunions. I distinctly remember an event in Mr. Amiet’s 4th grade class; we all got our lunches that day and took them to our classroom to eat. Mr. Amiet had Roger and I sit at the front of the class and the rest of the class was supposed to observe how we ate. I presume it was because we were both farm boys and knew how eat every thing on our plates. For some reason that memory always stuck with me. I do remember him as being soft-spoken, kind, hard-working, and a good student. I was blessed to know him then, and wish you God’s blessings and you mourn, remember his life.
