He was born August 27, 1945, in Baltimore, MD, to John Wesley “Wes” and Mildred “Mim” Burger Ament.  On August 31, 1968, he married Cheryl “Cheri” O’Hail.  He is survived by their two children John Christopher (Chris) Ament of North Royalton, OH, and Laura (Michael) Taylor of Geelong, Australia; grandchildren Alex Ament, Isabelle “Rilie” Taylor, and Luke Taylor; sisters Janice Flores of Columbia, MD, and Mary Kelly of Crofton, MD.

John graduated from Muskingum College (where he met Cheri) in 1967.  He married shortly thereafter, was drafted into the Army in 1968, and served in Fulda, Germany, for approximately 2 years.  After being honorably discharged, he worked for the Veteran’s Administration nearly his entire career, retiring in 2000.  He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic church and was a faithful Christian his entire life.  John loved to fish, work in the garden and grow vegetables, play tennis, coach his kids’ softball teams (when he was younger), have game nights with friends (when he was older), and read very large books (especially history).

  3. I knew Tom (to me he was Tom) we were classmates at Suitland HS. I don’t want to give the years but you can do the math. It was a long time ago. In fact a lifetime ago. We lost touch for many years but in his way he found me and contacted me thru Facebook a few years ago.

‘His way’ was to be a lifelong friend. ‘His way’ was to be compassionate and caring about long ago friends. ‘His way’ was to bring his religious beliefs and values into conversations. ‘His way’ was to laugh and enjoy each and every interaction.

The last time we spoke (a few weeks ago) he was distraught about the loss of Cheri. My hope is that he finds the love of his life in heaven and they’re at peace together, forever

  6. I may not have known you as well as I hoped due to our circumstances, but every time we talked, by day got better. You were always a down to earth person to talk to, even though our conversations were few and far between.

    You will be missed.

  8. We are in South Carolina for the winter and were shocked to learn from one of our friends that John had passed away. It was hard to lose his wife Cheri just a short five months ago and now we are saddened by losing John. In Wooster we live just a few blocks away from them. We often would ride our bikes over to John and Cheri’s just to stop and chat. We also enjoyed Game Nights with them for many years. We admired John’s vast knowledge in playing the games, but we really enjoyed his sense of humor. John was a very kind and caring friend. Chris and Laura, if there is anything we can do to help, please call (330-465-0127).

  9. Excerpts From “All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter” by J. R. R. Tolkien – “All that is gold does not glitter…From the ashes a fire shall be woken…Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.” In Christ may you now be at peace, John, so honorable and ever-loving to your Cheri. I remain a friend to you both and to your children and family. You will be sorely missed.

  11. I met John from St.Mary. For many years, he came to his Adoration time when I left mine. We would chat a little while passing each other. He was always so caring and loving, often he would ask ” how’s the family “.
A few weeks ago, when he learned I was alone in my Adoration time, he switched to my time so we can Adore God together.
John, you promised to be at Adoration when I couldn’t 😥. But it is ok because with faith I know you are in the present of God all the time now. I miss you.

  15. Tom was my little brother. It’s hard to believe that he is no longer with us. I will miss sharing things we both enjoyed such as gardening, waiting for the arrival and departure of the hummingbirds each year, and books. He was so sad about Cheri’s death, and I think he is now very happy with her in heaven. I’m glad for him, but I will miss him.

  17. John and Cheri came and visited us soon after our little girl was born last year. They brought treats and their ever-present warmth into our home, as they always did. That was the last time I talked with them. I had known them since my high school years to the present–meeting and singing with them in St. Mary’s choir, and attending game nights together. They were always easy to talk to and very compassionate people. My family and I will miss them terribly. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family. “May the angels lead you into paradise.”

  18. May God bless all of you. So sad to lose two wonderful people. I knew John and Cheri and enjoyed their company. They were members of our church group and we met mostly weekly for several years. They will be sorely missed. I pray for you, Chris and Laura and your families to help you through this sorrowful time. Peace and blessing.
