Freddy Joan (Beamer) Shearer, of Wooster, aged 90, passed away on March 19, 2023 at West View Healthy Living. She met death with the same courage, determination and resolve that she exhibited in life.
Freddy was born August 11, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri to Helen (Saunders) and H. Lee Beamer. She graduated from Harvey High (1949) in Painesville, Ohio and from the College of Wooster (1953) where she was honored as Color Day Queen in May of 1952. Freddy also met the love of her life and future ballroom dance partner, Keith Shearer, at Wooster College. They married on September 6, 1953 and celebrated 69 years of marriage in September of 2022.
Her life was a story of hard work and tireless dedication to family and community. A member of the United Methodist Church of Wooster for over 60 years, Freddy was active in the Methodist Women’s Society and the Deborah Circle. She was a founding member of Wayne County Republican Party State Central Committeewoman for the 16th Congressional District of Ohio. Freddy was an early member of Wooster’s Junior Women’s Club and a long-time member of the Floralynn Garden Club. Still, she found her greatest joy in volunteerism (over 30 years) while knitting and making dolls, doll clothes, and refurbishing toys for the People to People Ministries toy department Christmas program.
In her later years, Freddy became a voracious reader of mystery novels while also enjoying crossword and jigsaw puzzles and hosting holiday gatherings at home with family. Her handmade afghans and letters of advice and comfort are treasures. And above all, she was our friend.
Freddy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dr. Lee F. Beamer, several cherished friends, and her beloved German Shepherd companion, Lux. She is survived by husband, Keith, two daughters, Wyn (Douglas) Jones, and Dawn (William) Stanton of Wooster and by son Todd (Marilu) Shearer of Boiling Springs, SC; three grandchildren and four great grandsons.
There will be a small, private family service at the interment site. Freddy has asked that contributions in her memory please be directed to Wooster’s People to People Ministries toy department, 454 E. Bowman St., Wooster, OH 44691.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St, Wooster is assisting the family.

My Aunt Freddy holds many cherished memories. She loved her family and the Lord, was smart, dedicated, had a great sense of humor and laugh, and I thought was a great cook. She was also someone who let you know her mind, she backed up her opinions with thoughtful reasoning, and supported Keith and cherished her daughters Wyn and Dawn, son Todd and their husbands and wives Bill, Doug and Marilu. She was truly a sacrificial giver, was a bright star in the community with her talents, time, care and support, and had a beautiful heart and soul. Freddy and my mother wrote letters to each other often keeping us informed of what was going on with the family. I’m truly saddened by her loss and will miss my Aunt who carried herself with such poise and grace. Freddy will very much be missed in our daily lives and I take comfort knowing she is in heaven with the Lord, good health, friends and family. My love and prayers for strength and comfort to my family and those who were touched by this brilliant woman’s beautiful light.
Once upon a time, there was this person who came into the world in the ordinary way. And every day, that person learned a little more and grew a little more. That person had talents and gifts and thoughts and ideas like nobody else. That person had love to give and happiness to share. And that person made a difference in other people’s lives every single day. So, as it turns out, the day that person came into the world wasn’t ordinary at all. It was the beginning of the unique and important life of extraordinary you.
Wyn, Dawn, Todd and Mr. Shearer – Very sorry to hear about your moms passing. I pray that you are comforted by cherished memories of good times and her legacy of generosity to so many.
