Ruth Marie Haynes, beloved wife of LeRoy (Roy) Haynes, and mother of Keith Haynes and Anita Haynes (Robert Sparks) passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 13, 2023.  She is survived by her brother, Hans Schubert (Sue), sister, Teddy Moritz (Carl) and their families.  Ruth was the first child of Hans and Ruth Schubert.

She graduated from Caldwell High School in New Jersey and then completed a B.A. program at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey in 1956. There she met her future husband. They were married in 1958.  Once Roy completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, they, along with newly born son Keith, moved to Wooster in 1961 where Roy began his teaching career at the College of Wooster.  Daughter Anita was born in Wooster. Ruth held several short-term positions at the college, along with two-four-year stints working for the Department of Biology setting up laboratories and managing the green house.  She completed H&R Block courses to prepare herself to work for the company. Later she used those skills to help clients at the Community Center.

She was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Wooster serving on the church board, managing the Reading Room and being first and second reader several times.  She volunteered in the toy department at People to People. A most rewarding activity was her involvement with adult education programs particularly helping GED students and working with those learning English as a second language.

She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Her quiet time was spent working on watercolor paintings and reading. Ruth was a member of the Water Color Guild, Wooster Friends of the Wayne County Library, Women’s Committee of the Wooster Symphony, Rails to Trails of Wayne County, and the College Circle.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:30 pm in the parlor of the First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Ave., Wooster on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1736 Cleveland Rd., Wooster 44691, or to the Wayne County Public Library, 220 West Liberty Street, Wooster, OH 44691.

  1. If we’re lucky God places special people that will touch our lives when we are young and bring them back to you again when his timing is right. Your mom was that person for me so many years ago as I am sure she was to many and I know she was to you throughout your life. I remember seeing her as your mother in our little neighborhood as children and she was amazing, always so kind and sweet. Was glad for the time with her years later I appreciated her beauty and skills even more she was. I am truly sorry for your families loss. I will be holding the family in my prayers. May our Father’s love help guide you gently through this difficult time. Many hugs and much love.

When I fall, I shall rise; When I sit in the darkness, the Lord will be a light to me. Micah 7:8

  4. I had the pleasure of working with dear Ruth as I began as a part-time GED instructor in 1995. She had such a gentle way of encouraging students, especially when the idea of achieving their goal was so daunting. She was so quiet mannered — until we talked about plants!
Such warm memories of a special person who made this world better in countless ways.
