Elmer “Bimp” O. Hawthorne, 78, of Wooster passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Wooster Community Hospital after a short battle with cancer.

He was born August 7, 1944 in Dover the son of Ralph and Oda Snyder Hawthorne.  On December 12, 1964, he married Mary Troyer. She survives.

Elmer was a 1962 graduate of Tusky Valley High School and served his country in the U.S. Army.  He worked for Buehler’s as a meat department manager for 37 years.  Elmer was a member of the Gnat Boxers Square Dance Club.  He enjoyed going to cruise-ins with his 1960 Red Chevy Impala which won several awards, woodworking, gardening, playing cards, grilling and loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his children Wendy (Tim) Nicholas of North Canton, Alicia (Brian Booms) Hawthorne of Fairlawn and Shane (Cheri) Hawthorne of Canton; grandchildren Alan Nicholas, Sarah (Julian Bass-Preceded) Nicholas, Nathan (Angelina Seamann) Nicholas, Elizabeth Nicholas, Reese (Hannah) Hawthorne, Breanne (Joe) Detwiler, Sawyer Hawthorne, Audrey Hawthorne, Tucker Hawthorne and Mary Kate Hawthorne; great-grandchildren Josiah Hawthorne and Lili Detwiler; a sister Marilyn Hutson of Portland, OR and a brother Donald “Pete” Hawthorne of New Philadelphia; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Beverly Zifer, Emma Nichols and infant sisters Emma Jean and Janice Hawthorne; brothers Donald, Nelson, Bill, Dave, Larry and Paul Hawthorne.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 1:00 PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster with Pastor Bruce Smith, Sr. officiating.

Friends will be received 2 hours prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial take place in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army, 437 S. Market St., Wooster, OH 44691.

  22. Mary, just heard about Bimp’s passing. Praying for your family through this time. Glad I got to see him a few weeks past. He was a joy to work with at the downtown store. One of the nicest person I ever met. I never saw him angry or upset…..always easy going.
