John Frederic Hower, 82, of Wooster died on Friday, August 4, 2023 at his home.

He was born July 2, 1941 in Wooster to Lee and Bonnie Winger Hower.  On September 25, 1982, he married Sandra “Sandy” Peacock.  She survives.

John was a graduate of Wooster High School class of 1959 and his classmates were very special to him.  He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.  John was a self-employed painter.  In his spare time he enjoyed making wooden toys and wood crafts, rebuilding mopeds and scooters, and traveling with Sandy.  He especially enjoyed following The College of Wooster Men’s Basketball team and took pride in repainting the men’s locker room.  John was also a member of the Elks.

Along with his wife, Sandy, he is survived by his son Lee (Jodi) Hower of Jeromesville; step-daughters Nancy (Pete) Prosser and Joan (Jr.) Howell both of Wooster; grandchildren Madelyn Hower, Audrey Hower, Kyle Hower and Lauren (Nick) Swallow; great grandson Bradley Swallow; sister Linda Weaver of Holmesville; sister-in-law Trudy (Roger) Butts of Loudonville along with many special nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jack Hower and James Hower; brother-in-law John Weaver; nephews Andy Weaver and Jason Hower and Lee’s mother Barbara Hower.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Oak Chapel United Methodist Church, 4203 W. Old Lincoln Way, Wooster with Pastor John Finn officiating.  Private family burial will be held in Burbank Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.

McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

Contributions may be directed to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

  10. So sorry for your loss. John was a great guy, my husband enjoyed their days at Easterday Painting and him stopping by when we were outside to have a quick chat. Rest in peace “Gravy” .
