Elizabeth Hunt Hooker (née Elizabeth Stockton Hunt) of Wooster and Lakeside, Ohio was born on September 14, 1943 in Coshocton, Ohio to Mary Catharine Scott Hunt and Edward DeHart Hunt. She died peacefully on November 30, 2024 at the age of 81. Raised on a farm in Adams Mills, Ohio, she graduated from Coshocton High School, where she was a majorette and flutist. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech from Denison University in 1965 and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.

Elizabeth earned a Master of Arts degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Case Western Reserve University in 1967. She worked as a teacher and audiologist for the Summit Speech School, the first pre-school nursery for hearing-impaired children in New Jersey, and as a diagnostic audiologist for Summit Medical Group, a private medical practice in Summit, New Jersey. Upon returning to Ohio, she studied communication disorders and conducted research on aphasia at The Ohio State University.

On May 27, 1967, Elizabeth married her Denison sweetheart, Robert L. Hooker. They shared a close and loving marriage for fifty-five years, happily building a life together in Wooster.

A lifelong Presbyterian and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth was an ordained Elder and Deacon. During more than 50 years of membership, she taught Sunday School and served on nearly every committee. In honor of her service, she received an Honorary Life Membership Award in conjunction with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

As an advocate of liberal arts education, Elizabeth was a volunteer for The College of Wooster for more than 30 years to provide social, academic and financial support to students, especially women and international students. She served as an executive and honorary member of The Women’s Advisory Board for 27 years, including two terms as president from 1986-1992. She represented the community on the Wooster Leadership Group of the College and established the Scott Family Endowed Scholarship to assist students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.

Elizabeth was a founding member of The Women’s Fund and Give 365 Wayne County of The Wayne County Community Foundation. She was active in the American Association of University Women, Trowel and Trellis Garden Club, Colony Club, the Travelers Club and the DF Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, which promotes educational opportunities for women. Additionally, she served on the boards of the Wooster YMCA and the City of Wooster Planning Commission.

Elizabeth loved assisting her dear and loyal friend, Catherine Webster, as a teacher of the Mrs. Daniel Stephen Webster Cotillion in Wooster and Medina. For pure fun, Elizabeth was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge, mahjong, and golf with friends.

Elizabeth approached challenges with sincerity, dedication and a hopeful outlook. Most of all, she was a loving friend who sent handwritten notes of concern or congratulations each week. She exemplified a conscientious and caring way of life. Elizabeth will be remembered by her family for her decorum, perseverance, generosity, and ability to see the best in others.

She is survived by her children, Mary Catharine Stockton and Scott Hunt Hooker; her son-in-law, Jeffrey Walter Perkins; and five grandchildren: Scott Walter Perkins, Elizabeth Stockton Perkins, Henry Robert Perkins, Charlotte Frances Hooker and Andrew Scott Hooker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a grandson, James Hamilton Perkins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21st at 9 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Avenue, Wooster. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Women’s Fund of the Wayne County Community Foundation, 517 N. Market Street, Wooster, Ohio 44691 or the Scott Family Endowed Scholarship of The College of Wooster, 1189 Beall Avenue, Wooster, Ohio 44691.
