Lou was born to Louis and Florence Krippendorf Umbach Sr. on December 16, 1925, in Cincinnati. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon University) in 1946. On August 26, 1950, he married Faye Addis of New Concord, Ohio. Louis moved the family to Wooster in 1968 for a new work opportunity.
In 1978 another opportunity allowed Lou to design, build & manage Meta-Fab, Inc in Fredericksburg, Ohio including a solar heating system well before the current move to renewable energy.
Louis retired in 1992 (sort of), allowing he and Faye to travel, many times to visit their far-flung children. Nova Scotia was also a favorite destination. He continued to work with local builders as a consulting engineer until he was 97.
A member the Wooster United Methodist Church and Kiwanis Club, Lou volunteered for these and other organizations. A computer programmer since the days of punch cards, he created an inventory/sales program for the Buckeye Book Fair. Lou enjoyed many years of playing table tennis at the Wooster Community Center.
He is survived by his children Timothy (Linda) Umbach of San Francisco, CA., Joyce Umbach of Marshall, AR., David (Kelly) Umbach of Florence, AL., and Daniel (Kate) Umbach of Seattle, WA.; grandchildren Rebecca Umbach, Gwen Umbach, and Elizabeth Umbach.
Faye preceded him in death January 21, 2019. In addition, he was preceded in death by a daughter Susan Umbach; brother Kenneth Umbach; and grandson Christopher.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
