Mary Lucille Lake, 96, of Wooster died on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare.
She was born August 14, 1928, in Columbus to Daniel and Mary Redmond Bergin. She was a graduate of St. Mary High School.
Mary was born into humble beginnings, blessed with wonderful parents and a beloved sister, Nancy. The bond between the sisters remained strong throughout their lives. Both went on to marry and raise large families, with faith and family always at the center of their hearts.
A devoted Catholic, Mary carried her faith with her through every stage of life. When life took an unexpected turn and she found herself needing to provide for her family, Mary faced the challenge with courage and grace. She returned to the workforce, eventually working for the City of Cleveland and serving as an assistant to the mayor. Even in difficult times, Mary was known to say, “God is so good to me.” Her unwavering gratitude and joyful spirit were a reflection of her deep faith.
Later in life, she moved to Wooster, where St. Mary Church and Father Steve became an important part of her spiritual home. In her final years, Mary made her home at Brookdale, where she was cared for by a team of compassionate and irreplaceable caregivers.
Her children describe her as a pillar of strength and a source of guidance — the person they could always call, whether the problem was big or small. Above all, Mary lived a life grounded in faith and family. Her steadfast devotion to the Catholic Church and the people she loved will remain her lasting legacy.
She is survived by her children Daniel J. (Linda) Weiland, James L. Weiland, Linda C. (John) Graham, John G. (Terri) Weiland, Robert J. Weiland and Charles J. Weiland; many grand and great grandchildren; and extended family- Debra (John) Frame and Tom (Barb) Lake, Jr. and children; and sister Nancy Cecutti and her beloved family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Thomas E. Lake; parents; daughter Nancy K. Short; son-in-law Gerald Short and daughter-in-law Helen Weiland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 527 Beall Ave., Wooster. Private interment will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.
Contributions may be directed to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.

My deepest condolences I had a lovely pleasure of taking care of Mary she is going to be deeply missed and she was very loved. Fly with the angels love you Mary Lake. God Bless the family and thoughts and prayers are with you all
Grandma Mary was a beautiful and kind soul with abundant hugs and love for her family and others. She crocheted baby blankets for all her grandchildren and for the ones she “heard” about. She was always generous and ready to help those in need – I remember her “adopting” children from overseas by providing funds to them through multiple charity organization.
She loved her French Silk pies and she was an awesome cook herself. I have many profound memories of being at her Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Her house was epitome of love with her children and grandchildren. She was my mother in America. I will miss her forever!! Thank you for being a part of my life!!
I pray that all the beautiful memories you have with her comfort you during this time and always!!
May eternal rest come to her and may our Lord’s perpetual light shine upon her. I pray you know He is holding you in the palm of His hand during this difficult time and is there for you. God bless all of you.
ADD HEW CONDOLENCE YOUR EMAILL ADDRSS WILL NOT BE PUDIISNEH REQIRED FEELDS ASE MRARED
I am so sorry to learn about Mary’s passing. I provided care and companionship after her knee surgery and she was an absolute delight to be around. She always spoke so highly of all of her children and grandchildren. She left an impression on me forever. I was going to call for her birthday. Rest in Peace 🙏
