Carl M. Schmid, Jr., 83, of Wooster, Ohio, was lovingly welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on November 25, 2025, passing peacefully in his home after four grueling years of dialysis treatments. With his steadfast faith guiding him, Carl is now joyfully reunited with his parents in his eternal home.

Born May 1, 1942, in Wooster, Ohio, Carl was the son of Carl and Leona (Budd) Schmid Sr.

Carl is survived by his cherished wife of 63 blessed years, Marilyn (Hostettler) Schmid, who faithfully walked beside him through every season of life. He leaves behind three sons who were the pride of his heart—Jeff (Dawn), Greg (Stacie), and Eric (Karla)—and five grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy: Tyler (Andrea), Hannah, Collin, Lauren, Caden (Clair), and his brother John (Betty). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Carl lived his life with purpose, pouring his time, energy, and affection into his family. Being together with them was his greatest blessing. His life was defined by a deep love for God and a devotion to his family that never wavered.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert.

Carl dedicated 31 years of service to Rubbermaid, and in his retirement, he continued to pursue his passions and hobbies with enthusiasm. He was a current member of the Ohio Archaeological Society, the North Coast Hosta Society, and the Ohio Daylily Society Mansfield. His faith community at Ripley Church of Christ meant so much to him; he served many years as a deacon, sharing communion and ministering to those unable to attend worship. His faith was steady, humble, and lived out in quiet service.

A past member of Wayne County 4-H clubs, the Wayne County Fair Board for 12 years, Gnat Boxers square dancing club and Westwood Rotary, Carl found joy in serving and supporting his community. He received special recognition for being a faithful blood donor to the Red Cross, donating over 19 gallons.

Growing up on a farm shaped his love for God’s creation. He delighted in all things outdoors—hunting, fishing, and especially hunting for arrowheads. He was a loyal fan of Ohio State and Cleveland sports and rarely missed a Triway athletic event. But Carl’s greatest earthly passion was gardening. God gifted him with a green thumb, and each year he used those talents to create beauty. He was honored with numerous blue ribbons, including grand champion potatoes and the tallest sunflower, among many others.

Carl’s gentle, steady strength and big heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He prayed faithfully for the military, first responders, firefighters, and police, carrying them close in his heart. His legacy of kindness, faith, and love lives on powerfully through his sons—each a reflection of the man who guided them.

Carl ran his race with grace, loved faithfully, and served quietly. Though he has left this earthly home, his spirit lives on in the family he adored and in the faith that carried him.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Ripley Church of Christ, 12298 County Highway 330 Big Prairie, OH 44611.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the church with Pastor Tom Benter officiating. Interment to follow at Blachleyville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Contributions can be made to Ripley Church of Christ, 12298 County Highway 330 Big Prairie, OH 44611.

McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  19. Dear Marilyn, Jeff, Greg, Eric and your entire family…

My heart ached when I learned of Carl’s passing. One of my fondest memories was years ago, at a family reunion at your home as you were so gracious to host… Carl proudly led us on the hosta trail. Even today, I find myself thinking of him whenever I see a new variety …smiling, knowing he for sure would immediately recognize and would know exactly what it is…and likely how I should protect it from the deer chewing it to the ground! 😇

Sending you all our love, and wishing you comfort in the memories that will always stay close when you need them most.

    With love,

  21. Dear Marilyn and family:
Steve and I wanted to send our condolences for the passing of Carl. He was always a kind presence at our Hosta meetings. Last July when Eric visited our home for an event, he brought a Hosta gift from himself as well as you & Carl. I never knew about his involvement in the Ohio Archeological club; I would have liked to talk to him about that. Peace be with you and your family in the days to come. May his loving memories comfort you.

  28. We were honored to have Carl and his wife visit our greenhouses so I KNOW he was an avid gardener.

Carl won the race of life exhibiting what Jesus exemplified with humility and service. What an inspiration to his family.

I don’t know his other kids wells, but Greg is a superbly honorable man, following in the footsteps of his father, not just in character but his green thumb as well!

    Grateful to know this family!

  32. Marilyn and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. What an inspiration your family was to me through 4-H. I think i spent more time at your house in the summers than my own. Carl was always a calm and steady voice and i have no doubt that is why nature thrived around him. I was lucky to have known him. Peace and love to you all.

It was always a pleasure hearing him speak so lovingly about his wife, Marilyn, and children. He was a fair man and never showed any favoritism among those under him or any others for that matter.
