Ruth Laurene Yund, 83, of Wooster died on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Friends will be received at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 6-9:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church, 301 North Market St., Wooster on Friday, November 13 at 11:00 A.M. with the Pastors Eric Fairhurst and Alan Nathan officiating. Interment will follow at the Wooster Cemetery.
Laurene was born on November 3, 1926 in Wooster to Harold and Cecil (Kauffman) Conkle. She married Benjamin Casper on January 23, 1949; he died February 12, 1966. On August 1, 1967, she married Carl Yund. He died April 12, 1990.
Laurene graduated from Wooster High School in 1944 and graduated from the Wooster Business College in 1945. She worked for Dr. Jameson, the H. Freedlander Co., and as a secretary for Regal Ware. She and her husband, Benny, were co-owners of Benny?s Steakhouse, a family restaurant on Lincolnway West, Wooster. After Benny?s death, she worked in the payroll department for the City of Wooster. While working for the city she met and married Carl Yund, who was later Wooster?s Chief of Police, and was blessed to become ?Mom? to his children. Upon retiring form the City of Wooster, Laurene worked part time as a secretary in her daughter?s law office.
Laurene?s greatest pride and joy was her family and the home she made for them. She delighted most in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed the company of friends, many of whom she had known since high school. She was a member of various bowling and golf leagues, was an inaugural walker at The Gault Fitness Center and was a member of several bridge and other card clubs. A strong believer in service to others and the community, she volunteered for The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross and the Wayne County Republician Party. She was a communicant member at First Presbyterian Church and later became a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was active in Augustana-Matins Circle.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by an infant son, David Casper, her parents; brothers, Clifford Conkle and Robert Conkle; and an infant grandson, Timothy Yund. She is survived by daughters, Bonnie Casper (Doug) Drushal of Wooster, Cheryl Casper (Mike) Iaquinta of Columbus and Sandy Yund (Paul) Amann of Canton; sons, Brad (Darlene) Yund of North Olmsted and Bob (Susan) Yund of Massillon; grandchildren, Benjamin Drushal, Adam Drushal, Meredith Drushal, Michael Iaquinta, Eric (Brandi) Yund, Jillian Amann (Josh) Pancher, Ashley Amann, Laurie Yund (Steve) Cullen, Andy (Keri) Yund, Kristi Yund (Casey) Stovall, Patricia Yund (Jeremy) Johnston, Mary Yund; great grandchildren: Emily Cullen, Will Cullen, Brooke Yund, Morgan Yund, Jaydin Yund, Walter Stovall, Vivian Stovall, Evan Johnston and Bobby Johnston; a brother Walter ?Zeke? Conkle, a sister Barbara Grande Swartz and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her love, devotion, grace, humor and faith were a blessing to her family and enriched the lives of those who knew her. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the care and support of the staff and volunteers of Hospice and requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County or the Salvation Army.
