WOOSTER – Albert J. Kiel, 88, of Wooster died peacefully at Wooster Community Hospital on Thursday, August 25, 2011.
Al graduated from Wooster High School in 1943 where he served as president of his senior class and captain of the football team. He went on to earn his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Western Kentucky University. Al proudly served his country during WWII as a crew member on the USS Bayfield during the D-Day invasion of France which began on June 6, 1944. He married Marilyn Peggy Strouse on September 14, 1947.
He was an industrial arts teacher for many years at Wooster High School, Bowman and Edgewood Jr. High Schools. He also coached and refereed football. He retired as an associate principal at Crestview High School. After retiring from education he worked as a surveyor for the Wayne Co. Engineers Office and delivered food for Meals on Wheels. Al also served on the Wooster City Council and as a member of the YMCA Board of Directors.
Al enjoyed golfing, camping and the great outdoors. He loved to speak to students at Wooster High School during WWII veterans day activities and often traveled to WWII reunions to share memories with fellow veterans. Al was a devoted member of Central Christian Church in Wooster where he served as a deacon. He lived out his faith in a quiet and dignified manner expressed by his willingness to help anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife and children, John (Denise) Kiel, Pam (Chuck) Hess, Andy (Debbie) Kiel, grandchildren Allie Sherwood, Mallory (Chris) Thompson, Alex Kiel and Mark Kiel.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, brother Hans Kiel, sisters Emma Buchholz and Til Lorincz and a son Mark Jeffery Kiel.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 5-7:00 p.m.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Christian Church, 407 N. Market St., Wooster with the Rev. Kevin Phipps officiating. Burial will be in the Wooster Cemetery.
All will be greatly missed by all who knew him and especially so by his family and his wife of 64 years who all loved him dearly.
