Bernard J. Hoffman Sr. (Jerry) went home to the ranch in the sky January 16, 2013. Jerry was born February 25, 1928 in Cleveland to Marguerite Kiely and Benjamin Ambrose Hoffman. Jerry married his beloved army-brat girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Rhyne in 1947 after they met at Fort Monroe, Virginia; they were married for 61 years. He always made her laugh. A successful rancher his entire life, Jerry lived the values of hard work, self-sufficiency, doing things right the first time, perseverance, fairness, and having fun. His children and grandchildren enjoyed the benefits, and exhaustion, of living Jerry’s philosophy alongside him during his long life. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, a daughter, Christine Rhyne Hoffman, and his sister, Merilyn H. Wright. Jerry is survived by his five admiring and loving children: Kyle (Sally Cooper), B.J. Jr. (Traci), Mike (Tammy), Liz Ladrach (Jim), and Lisa Kurjan (Eric). Jerry is also survived by his cousin, Richard Gibbons, of Cleveland, Ohio. Jerry will be deeply missed by his nine grandchildren: Brian and Garrett Hoffman; Ben, Patrick, and Christopher Hoffman; Rhyne and Libby Ladrach; and Madeline and Anna Kurjan. There is a lot of Jerry in each of them. Jerry was devoted to St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wooster, Ohio or a community Hospice organization. A mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church January 21 at 10:00. A private burial service will be held.
