Arlene Shamp passed away in Reno, Nevada on April 20, 2022 at the age of 96.
Arlene was born in Kidron, Ohio on September 9, 1925 to William and Lola Sprunger. She graduated from Apple Creek High School in 1943. She married her high school sweetheart Lester Shamp on January 29, 1944 in Augusta, Georgia while he was in the army. After enjoying 66 years together, Lester passed away June 6, 2010.
During High School, Arlene enjoyed participating in plays and playing the cello in the school orchestra. Later, she was a member of the Rebeka Lodge, Secretary of the East Union Grange, and President of the Apple Creek American Legion Auxiliary. She has been an active member of the Apple Creek St. Peter ™s United Church of Christ all of her life.   In recent years she has enjoyed working with the Golden Hands Sewing Group. Arlene also enjoyed crafts including sewing, crocheting, oil and sand painting, shelling, music, gardening, and playing cards. Arlene and Lester spent many years camping with their daughters and spending the winters in Florida during their retirement. They loved to go fishing at Lake Erie and catching those walleyes. Arlene retired in 1985 after working 30 years at the former Apple Creek Developmental Center.
Arlene is survived by daughters Janet Richardson (CA), Jolene and Jeff Meier (NV), and Jill Shamp (OH), and granddaughters Sheryle Quinton (CA), Jessica Meier Merrill (TX), Jana Barclay (NV).  Arlene ™s  great-grandchildren include Tim, Gabrielle, Sherielle, and Lashae (CA). She is also survived by many relatives and friends in both Ohio and Reno.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister Shirley Eisinger of Apple Creek.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter ™s United Church of Christ, 68 W. Main St., Apple Creek.   Interment will follow in Apple Creek Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  2. My sincere condolences to the family on Arlene’s passing. She can truly say she used everything the Lord gave her, for herself and for others. Strong will, strong heart, strong beliefs. She lives on in her children and their children. Many blessings.

  3. Jolene and Jeff Meier, sending positive energy and prayers for strength to get you though the next days, weeks, months and years. I worked with Arlene many years at ACDC. I am glad her retirement years held many good times for her.

  4. Jill I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a great woman. Funny, a great cook, smart and loving. All the traits she passed down to you. I remember fondly sharing Thanksgivings with you and your mom after my mom passed. Your mom was so very welcoming just like you. She lived an amazing life and raised a great daughter and my friend. I am sending hugs to you and your family’s hearts.
