WOOSTER         Calvin E. Messner, 77, of Wooster passed away on Thursday evening, April 30, 2020 at Wooster Community Hospital from complications of coronavirus.   He had been a resident of Smithville Western Care Center since October 2018.
Calvin was born in March 1943 in Wooster, Ohio to Forest C. and Esther (Puff) Messner and was a lifelong resident of Apple Creek.   He graduated from Waynedale High School and had most recently worked at The Dollar General Store in Apple Creek before retiring.   He was a huge fan of Waynedale High School Sports, and would walk the few miles from his home to the school, never missing a home game.   After moving to Smithville Western Care Center, his friend Jim Miller and his family would often pick him up and take him to a game, which he really looked forward to.  Always eager to discuss sports, Calvin could recite specific game statistics from many years past.   Waynedale has lost a true and loyal fan.
Calvin is survived by an aunt, Ethel Shankland, of Wooster and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janice Messner and brother Dean Messner.
There will be no services.   Private burial will take place at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
