WOOSTER – Charles Douglas Gunn, 68, died March 2, 2008 at his home of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
He was born in Great Bend, Kansas, May 5, 1939, to Charles and Elizabeth Gunn. He graduated from Great Bend High School and earned a B.A. in English Literature from Kansas State University in 1961. He married Virginia Lee Railsback on August 19, 1961 in Manhattan, Kansas. He received a B.D. from Yale Divinity School in 1964 and a PhD in Religious Studies from Yale University in 1969. He taught history of religions at Syracuse University from 1969 to 1971, and at the College of Wooster from 1971 to 1975. Following his teaching career, he established his own rare and out-of-print book business, operating the Rowsburg Bookstore, as well as an Internet sales presence, GunnBooks.
Doug was active in the Boy Scout movement in Wooster as Scoutmaster of Troop 62. He was a member of the Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society (NOBS), edited their newsletter for several years, and was honored by being named a Fellow of the Book. He served as president of the Friends of Ashland University Library and was a longtime enthusiastic supporter of the AAUW book sale. He was a member of the Century Club and of Trinity United Church of Christ. Most recently, he served as CEO of his breakfast club.
He is survived by his wife Virginia of Wooster, son Eric Gunn of Athens, OH, son and daughter-in-law Peter and Mariela Gunn of Auburn Hills, Michigan and his mother Elizabeth in Kansas. His father Charles and a daughter Lucy Elizabeth preceded him in death.
His life was blessed and enriched by his family and the wonderful friends he met and enjoyed in all his educational, professional, avocational, and community endeavors.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 3:00 P.M. with the Rev. Diane Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
